US, asked about Sikh separatist groups, says it respects free speech
WASHINGTON - The State Department on Tuesday said the United States respects the right to freedom of speech and assembly of individuals when asked about American factions of the movement for a Sikh separatist state that has long frustrated India. The Indian government has complained about the presence of Sikh separatist groups outside India, especially in Canada. The groups have kept alive the movement for Khalistan, or the demand for an independent Sikh state to be carved out of India. One such group called Sikhs for Justice is based in the United States and has been organizing an unofficial so-called "Khalistan Referendum".

On topic: What led to India-Canada tensions?
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made an explosive announcement in the House of Commons on Sept. 18, saying there were "credible allegations'' that Indian agents were behind the assassination of a Canadian Sikh separatist leader. The revelation has strained ties between the two countries, with New Delhi calling the accusation "absurd." Here is a selection of stories on the latest developments. Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who called for carving out an independent Sikh homeland called Khalistan in the northern Indian state of Punjab, was gunned down by unidentified attackers outside a temple in Canada in June.

Punjab's Sikhs fear Canada-India row threatens them at home, abroad
BHARSINGHPURA, India - A bitter row between India and Canada over the murder of a Sikh separatist is being felt in Punjab, where some Sikhs fear both a backlash from India's Hindu-nationalist government and a threat to their prospects for a better life in North America. Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a plumber who left the north Indian state a quarter-century ago and became a Canadian citizen, was shot dead in June outside a temple in a Vancouver suburb where he was a separatist leader among the many Sikhs living there.

India warns on Canada travel after row over Sikh murder
NEW DELHI: India on Wednesday warned its citizens against visiting parts of Canada, the latest salvo in a diplomatic row over allegations New Delhi was involved in the killing of a Sikh separatist near Vancouver. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has demanded India treat with "utmost seriousness" the bombshell revelation of its probe into the murder. The fallout prompted tit-for-tat diplomatic expulsions and a forceful denial from India, which said any the suggestion it played a role in the June killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar was "absurd.
