New model to identify and predict chronic pain
Chronic pain is a complex condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide and understanding its causes and predicting its trajectory remains difficult. However, findings from a recent McGill-led study published in Nature Medicine could improve the understanding and management of chronic pain. The researchers developed a model that can predict one's likelihood of developing chronic pain as well as the severity and spread of that pain. The study also identified several key risk factors associated with increased chronic pain, including sleeplessness, feelings of distress, fatigue, stressful life events, and a body mass index (BMI) above 30.

The United Nations, the OSCE Mission, the Council of Europe and the EU Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina are dismayed that the Republika Srpska National Assembly today re-criminalized defamation. Freedom of expression is a fundamental right and a fundamental European value. This move contravenes the international human rights commitments of Bosnia and Herzegovina and is inconsistent with its European path as it is not in line with the 14 key priorities of the European Commission's Opinion, in particular, key priority 11 on an enabling environment for civil society, and key priority 12 on the freedom of expression.

Shared pathway upgrade to support tandem cyclists
Crown Lands upgraded access to the popular pathway off Yallah Bay Road near the Tallawarra Power Station, to ensure safer use for walkers, runners and all types of cyclists. Carpark bollards were in place to prevent motor vehicles driving onto the path and nearby grassed areas to protect public safety. However, tandem bicycles had difficulty accessing a narrow gap. The bollards were replaced with a new design to allow safer bicycle access while still restricting vehicles. The path entry was widened and a dirt section paved to provide a better connection and safer ride between the carpark and shared pathway.

The Mona Lisa, painted by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci, is one of the most recognizable paintings in the world. But many people would be surprised to learn that this painting offers the first evidence of a disease called familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). Close examination of her hands reveals the presence of xanthomas, a condition where fat builds up under the skin. FH is a genetic disorder that increases a person's risk of developing cardiovascular disease, due to increased levels of bad cholesterol in the blood.

For the first time, Australian women are invited to share their experiences in the health system to better inform policy development and improve health outcomes for women and girls. From delayed diagnosis, over medicating, dismissal of pain or other symptoms, or a lack of research and evidence used to treat women, there are many unique challenges confronting women, including for those that are part of diverse communities like LGBTIQ people, that lead to poorer health outcomes. DNA Editing Enhanced: More Efficient, Precise, Reliable
New method brings breakthrough in the precise introduction of mutations in human genomes In a new study, researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, describe improvements in the methods with which mutations can be introduced in human and other genomes - making these methods much more efficient and less error prone. In the field of genome editing, scientists often need to change one letter - corresponding to one of the DNA bases Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine or Thymine - to another letter at one specific position in the genome.

Neon Tetra Fish Queue Up to Dodge Bottlenecks
Schools of neon tetra fish (Paracheirodon innesi) use queuing to evacuate through narrow spaces without clogging or colliding, according to a study published in Scientific Reports. Aurélie Dupont and colleagues observed neon tetra evacuate in groups of 30 through a narrow opening in a tank, which ranged in diameter from 1.5 to 4 centimetres, in response to the movements of a fishing net. Neon tetra measure approximately 0.5 centimetres wide and 3 centimetres long. The authors observed that fish evacuated at faster rates through larger openings than smaller openings, but that fish evacuating through all sizes of opening tended to do so at a constant rate — with the exception of the last few fish in each group, who tended to exit more slowly.

This is a ground-breaking discovery as it for the first time suggests that dysfunctional glucoregulation by the brain can be targeted therapeutically using potent plant molecules to treat type 2 diabetes.
