Beyond reductive approaches to ‘cancel culture' as bad or good
The language and spectacle of public cancellation has a long history, but in recent years movements such as #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter have prompted what's been described as a 'cancellation' or ' cultural boycott ' of celebrities, brands and companies . From its beginnings in African-American subcultures – and following a long tradition of the appropriation of black language by white people – the term 'cancel' and its meanings have been appropriated by predominantly white mainstream media since the mid-to-late 2010s.

The agreement was announced in a joint statement by the lawyers for both sides late Saturday in the U.S., just two days before a jury trial was due to begin in a Hennepin county court in Minnesota. Last week, the lawyers selected 12 jurors, including five women, to hear the case that has seriously damaged Liu's reputation and once caused JD.

Transparency, accountability over perfection
The year 2018 felt like a particularly hopeful time for actresses and women everywhere. In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the resulting #MeToo movement, over 300 women in Hollywood banded together to form Time's Up — an anti-sexual harassment organization promoting gender safety and equity in the workplace. They had high-profile supporters like Meryl Streep, Oprah Winfrey, and Ashley Judd, and managed to raise over $22 million in their first year to provide legal aid to survivors. As of last January, however, Time's Up ceased to operate.

The hashtag that shook the world
BY forcing the world to wake up to the daily sexual abuse suffered by women, the #MeToo movement became a social revolution of historic importance. Its legacy is still being determined. It began with a tweet: on Oct 15, 2017, American actor Alyssa Milano invited women to share their experiences of sexual harassment under the words "Me too". Within a year, the hashtag had been used more than 19 million times, according to Pew Research Center - pushing the issue of sexual assault to the top of the global agenda.

Up Next for Weinstein: a Trial Where He Was Once King
(Newser) – Five years after women's stories about him made the #MeToo movement explode, Harvey Weinstein is going on trial in the city where he once was a colossus at the Oscars. Already serving a 23-year sentence for rape and sexual assault in New York, the 70-year-old former movie mogul faces different allegations, including several that prosecutors say occurred during a pivotal Oscar week in Los Angeles, per the AP. Jury selection for an eight-week trial begins Monday. Weinstein has been indicted on four counts of rape and seven other sexual assault counts involving five women, who will appear in court as Jane Does to tell their stories.

No glory for bullies: South Korea's school violence epidemic
BUSAN — Pins hidden in her shoes, head forced down a toilet, kicked in the stomach: Korean hairdresser Pyo Ye-rim suffered a litany of abuse from school bullies, but now she's speaking out. The 26-year-old is part of a phenomenon sweeping South Korea known as 'Hakpok #MeToo', where people who were bullied publicly name and shame the perpetrators of school violence — 'hakpok' in Korean — decades after the alleged crimes. Made famous globally by Netflix's gory revenge series 'The Glory', the movement has ensnared everyone from K-pop stars to baseball players, and accusations — often anonymous — can be career-ending, with widespread public sympathy for victims.

Did Me Too change the workplace for Gen Z?
Gen Z are the first generation to start their careers in a post-Me Too era. But how much the anti-harassment movement really shifted workplace culture is still up for debate. Like many women, I remember watching the Me Too movement mushroom as I scrolled through Facebook and Twitter in October 2017. While the hashtag #MeToo was first used in 2006 by black feminist activist Tarana Burke , who wanted to tackle sexual violence within her own community, it gained momentum following a viral tweet by actress Alyssa Milano after Harvey Weinstein's crimes were exposed.

Chinese court rejects appeal in landmark #MeToo case
BEIJING : A Chinese court rejected an appeal in a landmark sexual harassment case on Wednesday, dealing a blow to the country's fledgling #MeToo movement. Zhou Xiaoxuan stepped forward in 2018 to accuse popular state TV host Zhu Jun of forcibly kissing and groping her during her 2014 internship at the broadcaster. Zhou's case inspired many others to share their experiences of sexual assault publicly and sparked a social media storm. A Beijing court rejected her appeal on Wednesday (Aug 10), citing insufficient evidence.

Landmark #MeToo case returns to court after hiccups
Beijing: A landmark sexual harassment case in China was set to return to court after an earlier ruling dealt a blow to the country's fledgling #MeToo movement. Zhou Xiaoxuan stepped forward in 2018 to accuse state TV host Zhu Jun of forcibly kissing and groping her during her 2014 internship at the broadcaster. While the case of Zhou, now 29, inspired many others to share their experiences of sexual assault publicly and sparked a social media storm, a court ruled last year there was insufficient evidence to back her allegation.
