7 Years After He Went Missing at Sea, No Answers
(Newser) – In 2015, an American marine biologist went missing from a ship hundreds of miles off the coast of Ecuador. No sign of Keith Davis, then 41, has been seen since, and he is presumed dead, writes Rachel Monroe at the BBC. Monroe dug into the case for the Lost at Sea podcast given the unusual circumstances involved. Davis was aboard the Victoria 168, part of a Taiwanese tuna fleet. But he was no ordinary worker—he was what's known as a fisheries observer. These observers set out to sea in fishing vessels and work and live among the crew, but part of their job is to report any illegal activity they spot on the boat.

Rome Fines US Tourist for Eating on Fountain Steps
(Newser) – An American tourist was slapped with a $450 fine after police caught him sitting on the steps of a fountain early Saturday drinking a beer and eating an ice cream. The man had fallen afoul of one of the "urban decorum" rules the Italian capital introduced in 2017, the Guardian reports. Eating, drinking, and sitting are banned at the city's fountains. The Fontana dei Catecumeni was taped off by police Friday evening to stop anybody from sitting down—or diving in—but the tape was gone by the time the 55-year-old American sat down, reports La Repubblica.

DA: Eliza Fletcher's Murder 'Isolated Attack by a Stranger'
(Newser) – A body found in Memphis, Tennessee Monday was identified Tuesday as that of kidnapped teacher Eliza Fletcher—and Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy addressed what he called "baseless" rumors about the case. Fletcher's family has "been fully cooperative throughout the entire process, and in contrast to whatever baseless speculation you might've seen, we have no reason to think this was anything other than an isolated attack by a stranger," the DA said, per Newsweek. Fletcher, a junior kindergarten teacher, was the granddaughter of late billionaire businessman Joseph Orgill III but she didn't work for the family business, the BBC reports.

Some of the Documents Seized at Mar-a-Lago Went Beyond Top Secret: Sources
(Newser) – The FBI raid at Mar-a-Lago last month recovered a document describing the military defenses—including nuclear capabilities—of a foreign government, according to sources who spoke to the Washington Post. The sources did not name the government. The Post previously reported that agents were specifically looking for documents related to nuclear weapons when they searched Trump's private residence in Florida, a claim Trump decried as a "hoax." According to the sources, some of the documents recovered during the raid required more than just top-secret clearance in order to be accessed.

Bear That Fought Off Attacker Found Dead in Cave
(Newser) – The fate of a bear seen fighting valiantly to save one of her cubs was tragic, but "these are things that happen in nature," says Guillermo Palomero, president of Spain's Brown Bear Foundation. In June, hikers in the northern Castile and Leon region recorded video of the mother bear struggling with a much larger male bear that apparently wanted to kill the cub to bring the mother back into heat, which is common behavior during mating season. Both bears tumbled down a cliff. The 480-pound male bear died of his injuries and the mother, wounded in the fight and the fall, took refuge in a cave system with the cub, the Guardian reports.

Case of Missing Teen Takes Bizarre Twist
(Newser) – It seemed like a good-news story at the time: On Sept. 1, police in Washington state found a 16-year-old boy in the woods who had been reporting missing the previous day, having failed to show up for football practice, reports the News Tribune. He was shirtless and in bare feet, and he told his rescuers he had no memory of what happened. His truck, with blood found inside it, had been previously discovered, along with his smashed phone near it. Then came the unexpected twist: On the same day police found the teen, they also found the body of a 51-year-old man, Daniel McGraw, in his home in Orting.

The list, compiled by Betsperts, found that more than 17,000 infants born in the US in that time period were given the same name as the NBA great, who was killed in a helicopter crash in January 2020. After his death, parents' selection of "Kobe" saw a whopping 201% spike from the previous year. It's Official: There's an Adderall Shortage
(Newser) – There've been rumblings for months at some US pharmacies on difficulties obtaining Adderall. Now, official word from the Food and Drug Administration: There's a US shortage of the medication used to treat ADHD, reports NBC News. In a Wednesday release, the FDA announced the dearth of the drug, also known as amphetamine mixed salts, and noted that Teva Pharmaceuticals, the nation's largest Adderall maker, "is experiencing ongoing intermittent manufacturing delays." Although other manufacturers are doing their best to keep churning out the medication, "there is not sufficient supply to continue to meet US market demand through those producers," the FDA noted.

Intelligence Review Begins on Files Taken From Mar-a-Lago
(Newser) – Intelligence officials say they're reviewing government documents taken from former President Trump's Florida home to assess any risk to national security. Avril Haines, director of national intelligence, told congressional committee chairmen in a letter that the assessment will not interfere with the Justice Department's criminal investigation of the handling of the documents, the New York Times reports. The goal is to see what the potential damage from disclosure of the information in the documents might be—which intelligence sources or systems could be identified and compromised.
