In a press statement published on Friday, the Security Council members called for the immediate and unconditional release of Niger's democratically elected President Mohammed Bazoum and underscored the need to protect him, his family and members of his government. Earlier this week, the demand to release the President of Niger was voiced by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Late on Wednesday, 26 July, a group of Nigerien military officers made a television announcement declaring a coup, after members of the president's own guard detained him inside his offices in the capital city of Niamey.
