The French countryside has known more than its fair share of disputes over noisy roosters and farm machinery. Now trouble is brewing over winegrowers' use of 'deafening' anti-frost towers. Villagers in the southwest say the giant towers — motorised fans mounted on high masts that churn the air to raise temperatures and prevent spring frosts from ruining vines — are as noisy as helicopters and keep them awake. Mild winters often result in vines budding early, leaving them vulnerable to late frosts.
