Korean conductor Yoon Han-kyeol won the Herbert von Karajan Young Conductors Award, one of the top prizes for young conductors, in Salzburg, Austria on Sunday. The 29-year-old became the first Korean to win the contest, which drew 323 contestants from 54 countries. "I sweated a lot in rehearsal yesterday, but I didn't even feel hot today, perhaps because I was so nervous," he said. The contest, which started in 2010, has launched several budding conductors on the international stage, including Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conductor Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla, Dutch National Opera conductor Lorenzo Viotti and Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra music director Aziz Shokhakimov.
