Chronicling a crisis that keeps on killing
The costs of Canada's toxic drug crisis keep piling up. In 2020, Canadians' use and abuse of opioids resulted in an estimated $7.1 billion in health and productivity costs, or 14.4 per cent of the $49 billion in costs caused by alcohol, tobacco, opioid and cocaine use. The same year, drugs resulted in the loss of over 200 lives per day, according to a report compiled by the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction and the University of Victoria's Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research.
