AP Interview: Iraq oil minister says gas sector a priority
BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq's oil minister says the country's oil sector is rebounding after a catastrophic year triggered by the coronavirus pandemic, with key investment projects on the horizon. But he also is warning that enduring bureaucratic culture of fear threatens to stand in the way. Ihsan Abdul-Jabbar Ismail spoke to The Associated Press on Friday. He said that Iraq is currently trading oil at $68 per barrel, close to the approximately $76 needed for the state to operate without reliance on the central bank to meet government expenditures.

UK retail sales dip as lockdown easing lifts socializing
LONDON (AP) — Retail sales in Britain slipped back in May as people ventured out to spend money on restaurants and pubs instead following the easing of coronavirus lockdown restrictions. The Office of National Statistics said Friday that retail sales during May were 1.4% lower than the previous month, when they surged 9.2% after shops selling nonessential items were allowed to reopen after a months-long shutdown. It said the biggest downward contribution to the May figures came from food sales, which fell by 5.

EXPLAINER: Ranked choice voting gets big test in NYC
NEW YORK (AP) — Ranked choice voting makes its debut in New York City's mayoral primary Tuesday. Rather than pick just one candidate, voters get to rank several in order of preference. Even if a voter's top choice doesn't have enough support to win, their rankings of other candidates still play a role in determining the victor. One downside of the system is it makes it tough to forecast a winner before the vote count is complete. That means people shouldn't expect to learn who won on election night.

Asian shares mixed after listless session on Wall Street
BANGKOK (AP) — Shares are mixed in Asia after a listless day of trading on Wall Street as the recent bout of nerves over Federal Reserve policy fades. Markets advanced in Tokyo, Seoul and Hong Kong while Sydney and Shanghai declined. On Wednesday, the S&P 500 slipped 0.1% after meandering between very modest gains and losses. It's 0.3% below its record high set a week and a half earlier. The Dow fell 0.2%, while the Nasdaq added 0.1% to its record set a day earlier. The majority of stocks in the S&P 500 fell, but gains for companies that do best when the economy is healthy helped limit the losses.

Two coaches removed from Tokyo Olympics in Belarus case
TOKYO (AP) — Two Belarus team coaches have been removed from the Olympics after being involved in trying to send sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya back to their country. The International Olympic Committee says the credentials of Artur Shimak and Yury Maisevich have been canceled and removed. Both men are due to be interviewed by an IOC disciplinary panel formed to investigate what happened to Tsimanouskaya. Shimak and Maisevich continued to have contact with Belarusian athletes since Sunday. The IOC linked them to taking Tsimanouskaya in a car to the airport to put her on a plane to Belarus because she criticized team coaches.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Chloé Zhao's history-making Oscars sweep, winning best director and best picture, is being met with a muted response in her country of birth, and even censorship. Zhao's 'Nomadland' is the second film directed by a woman to win a best picture Oscar. She is the first woman of color and second woman ever to win the Oscars for best director. Yet, in China, where Zhao was born, her history-making success has not been trumpeted. State media in China remained silent with only old mentions of the Oscars themselves.

Trump criminal investigation looms over Manhattan DA race
NEW YORK (AP) — New York City voters will be casting their last ballots next month in an election that's sure to have consequences for former President Donald Trump. Democrats will be voting in party primary for Manhattan's next district attorney. The winner could end up taking over an ongoing investigation of Trump's business dealings. Current District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. is leaving office at the end of the year. The eight candidates have made clear they're not afraid of taking on the former president, but most have been cautious to stay away from overtly anti-Trump rhetoric.

Jimmy Carter, trounced in 1980, gets fresh look from history
ATLANTA (AP) — Jimmy Carter is sometimes called a better former president than he was president. The backhanded compliment has always rankled Carter allies and, they say, the former president himself. Yet now, 40 years removed from the White House, the most famous resident of Plains, Georgia, is riding a new wave of attention as biographers, filmmakers, climate activists and Carter's fellow Democrats push for a recasting of his presidential legacy. It's particularly important for the wide swath of Americans, from young Generation X votes to Millennials and Generation Z, who are getting perhaps their first in-depth look at a president who left the White House more than 40 years ago after a landslide defeat.

China, in global campaign, vaccinates its people in Thailand
BANGKOK (AP) — Chinese citizens living in Thailand have begun being vaccinated as part of China's global campaign to inoculate its nationals living and working abroad. The vaccines were donated by China to be administered to its nationals as Thailand slowly rolls out shots for its own citizens to contain a coronavirus surge that has sickened tens of thousands in the past two months. It was unclear how many of the 150,000 Chinese citizens living in Thailand will be inoculated under Beijing's 'Spring Sprouts' program in this round of inoculations, but China recently donated 500,000 vaccine doses to Thailand.

Iran votes in presidential poll tipped in hard-liner's favor
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran has begun voting in a presidential election tipped in the favor of a hard-line protege of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Polls opened at 7 a.m. local time Friday for the vote. Public apathy has been widespread after a panel under Khamenei barred hundreds of candidates, including reformists and those aligned with the outgoing president, the relatively moderate Hassan Rouhani. State-linked opinion polling and analysts have put hard-line judiciary chief Ebrahim Raisi as the dominant front-runner among the four candidates.

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — Yemeni security and medical officials say that an explosion in the southern province of Abyan has killed at least five separatist troops and wounded six people, including civilians. They say the blast took place on Friday, moments after a convoy of the secessionist Southern Transitional Council arrived at a market that sells khat leaves, which are highly popular in Yemen and widely chewed by men for the plant's stimulant properties. Biden releases money in push to modernize US electric grid
NEW YORK (AP) — The federal government is making money available to build and improve electric transmission lines. It's part of a bid to improve the nation's aging electric grid and meet President Joe Biden's ambitious clean-energy goals. The administration is also pledging to speed up a sluggish permitting process that has delayed the types of major transmission projects that are crucial to meeting Biden's goal. The president has said he wants the nation to produce 100% clean energy by 2035. But that goal faces huge hurdles, including an electric grid which needs enormous expansion to carry electricity from the renewable energy sources to densely populated regions.

Yellen: Biden's phased-in spending plan won't fuel inflation
WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says President Joe Biden's massive proposed spending on infrastructure, families and education won't fuel inflation because the plans would be phased in gradually over 10 years. Some economists have warned that the Federal Reserve's current ultra-low interest rates, and the administration's proposed $4 trillion in new spending, atop about $5 trillion already approved by Congress, risk accelerating inflation. Yellen says she doesn't believe that inflation 'will be an issue, but if it becomes an issue, we have tools to address it.

Activist says he flew 500K leaflets across Koreas' border
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A South Korean activist says he launched 500,000 propaganda leaflets by balloon into North Korea in defiance of a new law that criminalizes such actions. If confirmed, it would be the first violation of the law that carries punishment of up to three years in prison. The law has invited criticism South Korea is sacrificing freedom of expression to improve ties with North Korea. Police couldn't immediately confirm the launches. The activist said the 10 balloons he sent this week carried leaflets criticizing Kim Jong Un's government and 5,000 dollar bills.
