On May 14, 2002, more than 1,500 Cahaba Heights residents made it known they wanted to join the city of Vestavia Hills in a referendum. Following that vote, which saw 1,627 residents vote 'yes' and 866 vote 'no,' the city of Vestavia Hills officially annexed Cahaba Heights on May 20. Twenty years later, one of the three major areas in the city of Vestavia Hills continues to grow and provide a 'neighborhood' feel for its residents. Getting the word out Margaret Hess had lived in Cahaba Heights for about seven years before building a house near what is now Vestavia Hills Elementary Cahaba Heights.

The fiscal 2023 budget will bring some raises for Vestavia Hills City Schools teachers and increases in both revenues and expenditures. Courtney Brown, the chief school finance officer for the district, said expenditures are up about $5 million from fiscal 2022's budget and revenues are up about $4.2 million. This year's budget, approved Sept. 12 by the Board of Education, is a 'tight' one, she said. The budget includes a 4% mandated state raise for teachers. The school system receives local, state and federal funds, in addition to a few other revenue sources, according to Brown's presentation to the board.

The Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church's annual Whale of a Sale event is returning to the city this fall on Sept. 22. The twice-yearly sale hosted in the fall and spring is a fundraiser for the church's Vestavia Day School, the church's day care. This month's Whale of a Sale will be in-person, said Kristen Honeycutt, event organizer. 'As of now, we're in-person and we're excited,' Honeycutt said. The church will be selling children's fall and winter clothes, up to size 14, as well as toys and maternity clothing, which is a new item to the sale 'It's the only fundraiser for the Vestavia Day School,' Honeycutt said.

Rd. 14 and plan to pay your own park entrance fee. Bring your family, lawn chairs, some snacks and individual bottles of cold water or soda to share, and any memorabilia you would like to display. Jacob Tubbs describes the Bump & Grind race as an institution and a complete mountain bike experience. Serving as race director, Tubbs said the event has occurred for the past 28 years, which is impressive because the sport itself is barely even that old, he said. 'It's a big deal,' Tubbs said. 'It's the oldest race of any kind in the state.' Mountain biking started in the early 1990s in northern California, and by the late 1990s, Tubbs said road bikers who loved the outdoors had the forethought to build trails at Oak Mountain State Park.
