Russian police detain journalists who back media freedom
MOSCOW — Russian police on Saturday detained several journalists who protested authorities' decision to label a top independent TV channel as a "foreign agent." The journalists held individual pickets outside the main headquarters of the country's top domestic security agency, the FSB, on Moscow's Lubyanka Square. They held placards such as "Journalism is not a crime" and "You are afraid of the truth" to protest the Justice Ministry's move Friday to add the Dozhd (Rain) TV channel and the online investigative outlet Vazhnye Istorii (Important Stories) to the list of "foreign agents.

Hennepin theaters in Minneapolis will also now require vaccines and masks
Time to put your "Frozen: The Musical" plans on ice if you're over the age of 12 and don't yet have a COVID-19 vaccination or are unwilling to be tested or wear a mask. The Hennepin Theatre Trust — which operates the Orpheum, State and Pantages theaters in downtown Minneapolis — announced Wednesday that it, too, will be requiring proof of vaccine or a negative COVID test for admission to any of its performances. Guests will also be required to wear masks inside all the venues except when eating or drinking.

Atheists, humanists sue over Mississippi's license plates
JACKSON, Miss. — Four words on Mississippi's license plates have sparked a federal lawsuit. American Atheists, the Mississippi Humanist Association and three nonreligious state residents filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the state over its "In God We Trust" license plate. The complaint accuses the Mississippi Commissioner of Revenue of violating the people's freedom of speech and religion by forcing them to display the religious message on their personal vehicles. The license plate has included "In God We Trust" since 2019.

Israel asks allies for help as wildfires rage near Jerusalem
JERUSALEM — Israeli leaders on Monday appealed to their international allies as firefighters battled wildfires near Jerusalem for a second day after the blaze forced hundreds of residents from their homes. Israel Fire and Rescue service said that 75 firefighting teams accompanied by 12 planes were working to contain a series of fires in the forested hills west of the city. At least 17 square kilometers (6.5 square miles) of forest have already burned, according to official tallies, making it one of the largest wildfires in the country's history.

University of Minnesota looks to wastewater treatment plants to recover dwindling phosphorus supplies
Most of the phosphorus that is used to grow Minnesota's vast corn and soybean fields finds its way to the Mississippi River. Then it travels 2,000 miles, past St. Louis and New Orleans, to the Gulf of Mexico, where it not only creates a massive dead zone that kills off ocean life, but is lost forever as a useful fertilizer. University of Minnesota researchers believe they can help stop that loss. They'd like to capture the phosphorus, which is spread in manure and fertilizers, before it reaches the Mississippi, keeping it out of lakes, rivers and other waters where it creates, among other problems, massive toxic algae blooms.

Great weather, great fishing for opener
LAKE WINNIBIGOSHISH – At about 67,000 acres, this wide spot in the Mississippi River is the fifth-largest lake in Minnesota. More than a century ago, loggers, fur traders and others downstream had argued for a more constant flow of the big river, and in 1881 and again a few years later, the government acquiesced and built the Winnibigoshish Lake Dam. Construction of the dam created a lake with a maximum depth of 70 feet and a mean depth of about 15 feet, ideal for the propagation of perch, walleyes and northern pike.

Levin: Excited by rising house values? Some of your other assets may be more important
The most famous line in George Orwell's book "Animal Farm" is when the pigs declare, "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." While this line represents a cynical view of government, a description of your personal net worth statement may read, "All assets (and debts) are equal, but some are really more equal than others." Let's consider how to view the things on your balance sheet, without muchregard to how they got there. In this environment, many people are excited about how much their house has appreciated and may be feeling asset rich.

Minneapolis City Council unanimously eliminates parking requirements
The Minneapolis City Council voted unanimously Friday to eliminate minimum parking requirements on new developments citywide. The move is a significant switch from practices in most cities requiring developers to include a certain minimum number of parking spaces depending on the size of a new commercial or residential structure. Nordy, the Minnesota Wild's mascot, might be out of a job. What this team needs is not a nondescript furball in a Christmas-tree sweater. What this team needs is an emotional support animal. Amid all of the optimism the Wild expressed late Friday night after being eliminated from the first round of the Stanley Cup playoff were these two, telling words: "Sideshow." "Stuff." They were uttered by the Wild's two highest-paid and longest-tenured players, Zach Parise and Ryan Suter. By definition, and to borrow another of Suter's words, it's "tough" for a franchise to move on from franchise players.

More than 800,000 infections with the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 have been reported in Minnesota, which saw two key indicators of pandemic severity increase Tuesday after some hopeful declines last month. COVID-19 hospitalizations in Minnesota increased on Monday to 978 — seesawing between a recent high of 1,008 on Oct. 15 and a low of 907 on Oct. 22 — while the state's reported positivity rate of diagnostic testing increased to 7.9%. Saturday night, Vikings receiver Adam Thielen ran a route over the middle, took a hit, then limped to the sideline. A minute later, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer talked to Thielen, who, while standing, pointed at his right leg. The injury may not be serious, but these are the Vikings and this is 2021 so let's apply this disclaimer: Problems may be more worrisome than they first appear. The Vikings on Saturday lost to the Indianapolis Colts, 12-10, at U.S. Bank Stadium, in a game that marred an excellent halftime show featuring dogs.

Anthony Davis back in Lakers' starting lineup for Game 6
LOS ANGELES — Anthony Davis is in the Los Angeles Lakers' starting lineup Thursday night as they face playoff elimination in Game 6 of their first-round series against the Phoenix Suns. Davis missed the second half of Game 4 and all of Game 5 after the eight-time All-Star injured his groin last weekend at Staples Center. The defending NBA champion Lakers lost both games to fall to a 3-2 series deficit and the brink of an early postseason exit. Davis scored 34 points apiece while leading the Lakers to victories in Games 2 and 3, but his tentative play in Game 1 was a key factor in Los Angeles' series-opening loss.
