5 key takeaways from the indictment against Donald Trump
Trump's long-awaited capitulation was relatively muted. The demonstrations outside the courthouse ended peacefully, despite ongoing concerns about political violence following the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. The district attorney's office revealed a wide range in their indictments, accusing Trump of 'repeatedly and fraudulently' falsifying records. The indictment against former US President Donald Trump was unsealed in a Manhattan court on Tuesday, revealing 34 felonies against the Republican leader.

'World dangerously close to recession,' World Bank President warns
World Bank President David Malpass on Thursday warned that the global economy was 'dangerously close' to recession and called for targeted support for the poor. 'The growth rate, we have lowered our growth forecast for 2023 from 3 percent to 1.9 percent for global growth. As voters fret the economy, Dems narrow the new message: Save Social Security, Medicare from GOP
Democrats, faced with relentless GOP attacks over high inflation, seem confined to defending programs like Social Security and Medicare as they — in the final weeks of the mid-term cycle — seek to bolster their standing with voters who say that they are more desperate about the economy. In recent days, President Joe Biden and top lawmakers have bragged on Capitol Hill that they will stifle any attempt to cut the programs, both by capitalizing on the rising likelihood that Republicans will take control of at least one next month Winning back the Chamber of Congress, as well as plans by some GOP lawmakers that could limit entitlement programs as part of broader government spending changes.

Officer: I left Proud Boys because I fear ‘far left' attacks
A Connecticut police officer who belonged to an far-right group accused a civil rights activist who complained to his department of trying to 'silence conservative voices,' according to a letter obtained by The ƒ. In his letter, addressed to the East Hampton Police Commissioner, Officer Kevin Wilcox said he had been a dues-paying member of the Proud Boys for about eight months. By Sammy Edwards Last updated Dec 30, 2022 To the Editor: Columnist Jonah Goldberg appears to be suffering from a case of selective amnesia about who President Nixon was and what he did. ('As 2022 closes, Trump has ousted Nixon as saddest figure in post-presidency politics,' Opinion, Dec. 27.) Goldberg wrote that after Nixon resigned from the presidency in 1974, he had 'regained the reputation of a wise man.' WASHINGTON – The nation's capital has been two years since a violent mob of supporters of then-President Donald Trump, fueled by his false claims of a stolen election, attacked the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. The rioters attacked police and broke into the complex to interrupt confirmation of President-elect Joe Biden's victory, forcing lawmakers into hiding. Congress reconvened hours later to finalize confirmation of the election. Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick was injured while confronting the rioters, suffered a stroke the next day and died of natural causes, the Washington, DC Coroner's Office said.

Lawyers for advisory columnist E. Can spicy food boost our gut health? Here's what the science says
When it comes to questions about health and longevity, many researchers turn to the gut microbiome — the community of microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, and fungi that live in the human gut — for answers. Scientists are just beginning to understand how the microbiome affects our health in many ways, but early evidence suggests it may play a role in disease outcomes such as some types of cancer, long Covid and Parkinson's disease. Of particular interest is determining which foods are beneficial for the microbiome and ultimately for various aspects of one's health.

Scientists find 17-pound meteorite in icy Antarctica
A brave team of scientists has endured the inhospitable conditions of Antarctica's frozen desert to recover five new meteorites, including a nearly 17-pound space rock. The team of scientists included the Field Museum and University of Chicago researcher Maria Valdes, who estimated that of the 45,000 meteorites recovered so far from Antarctica's frigid wasteland, only about 100 were the size of the largest member of this new one transportation which weighs 16.7 pounds (7.6 kilograms). 'Size doesn't necessarily matter when it comes to meteorites, and even tiny micrometeorites can be incredibly valuable scientifically, but of course, finding a large meteorite like this is rare and really exciting,' Valdes said in a statement.

Seattle schools sue tech giants for social media harm
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Public School District has filed a novel lawsuit against the tech giants behind TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Snapchat to hold them accountable for the mental health crisis among youth. Seattle Public Schools filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court on Friday. The 91-page complaint says the social media companies have created a public nuisance by targeting their products at children. It blames them for deteriorating mental health and behavioral disorders, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders and cyberbullying; impeding the education of students; and forcing schools to take actions such as hiring additional mental health professionals, developing lesson plans on the impact of social media, and providing additional training for teachers.

10 challenges for the economy in 2023
In the 2023 election year, the Greek economy faces ten major challenges in a difficult environment. Inflation is expected to remain high for at least the first quarter and the European Central Bank is set to announce another rate hike in February, with a possibility of a sixth straight hike in March. It is also possible that most of the now 20 countries in the euro zone are going through a recession for the second quarter in a row. 1. The biggest challenge is to achieve real growth in 2023. It's expected to be slower than 2022 — 1.

Don't expect a Goldilocks economy
Most commodities are cheap today. But that won't last. Creating a sustainable world is an existential necessity. However, huge amounts of raw materials are required. These commodities can only be produced in sufficient quantities if prices are high enough to incentivize producers. Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) estimates that copper prices would need to rise about 30% to meet future demand. The current economic slowdown has only shifted demand. A recession doesn't change how much copper is needed to build an electric fleet and the infrastructure that goes with it.
