Policymakers discuss Arctic sovereignty, security at Iqaluit summit
One-day event follows $4.9-billion NORAD improvement funding announced by defence minister in June Senators, policymakers and analysts from across the country gathered for a summit on security and sovereignty in the Arctic in Iqaluit on Oct. 3. Key themes at the event included partnership with Inuit and Northerners, the need for better infrastructure, and the need for Canadians in the south to pay attention to morthern issues and challenges. (File photo)Brandon Lyta took police to scene of where alleged murder took place The morning after Levi Michael died in Iqaluit in May 2020, the man now accused of killing him voluntarily took police back to the location where their confrontation took place, an Iqaluit courtroom heard Friday. Brandon Lyta, who was 23 at the time, is charged with second-degree murder in the May 15, 2020 death of Levi Michael.

(Photo courtesy of Nunavik Police Service) Justice  Aug 4, 2022 – 4:03 pm EDT Five people were arrested under village bylaws, issued tickets By Nunatsiaq News Nunavik Police Service says officers seized 14 parcels containing 125 bottles of contraband alcohol in Inukjuak last week worth an estimated $51,000. The seizures, which included bottles of vodka of various sizes with an alcohol concentration of 40 per cent, took place July 28 and 29, according to a news release from the service.

Previous contract expired more than 2 years ago; 23 workers affected Talks have stalled between the Iqaluit Housing Authority, shown here, and the Nunavut Employees Union. Unionized employees of the authority are working under a collective agreement that expired two years ago. Talks stalled Aug. 18, according to Public Service Alliance of Canada north regional executive vice-president Lorraine Rousseau.

More staff became available which made the earlier reopening possible, department spokesperson Danarae Sommerville told Nunatsiaq News.
