'A phase that we must endure': Unending grief over earliest COVID deaths on Long Island
The pandemic's first coronavirus deaths on Long Island were all reported on March 16, 2020, a Monday. Three Suffolk County residents had died: a man in his 80s, one of the Island's first known infected patients; and a man and a woman in their 90s. The next morning brought Nassau's first reported death, of a 96-year-old man. (Since then, more than 9,000 Long Islanders have died of COVID-19.) Within weeks of those first deaths, so many people were dying daily that the toll felt impossible to fathom.

LI's Congress members must help make Plum Island a national monument
From the coastline of Fire Island to the 30-plus miles of hiking trails on the Greenbelt Trail, Long Island is home to many beautiful parks and natural areas enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Due to climate change and stalled conservation efforts, however, many of these open spaces are under threat. With support from federal lawmakers, we can conserve these natural areas that Long Islanders treasure. One prime example is Plum Island. The 822-acre federally owned island off the North Fork is home to rich biodiversity and cultural heritage.

Kathy Hochul, Lee Zeldin set for lone debate in NY governor race
Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul and Republican challenger Lee Zeldin will square off Tuesday for their only debate of the campaign, just two weeks before Election Day and as the race has tightened. The one-hour debate, hosted by Spectrum News NY1, is set for 7 p.m. The event will mark perhaps the final milepost in the race before early voting begins Saturday statewide. It also gives candidates the opportunity to make closing arguments to try to sway undecided voters. But with polls showing a scarcity of such voters, the debate just as well provides Hochul and Zeldin, a Republican congressman from Shirley, with an opportunity fire up supporters and encourage them to go vote.

Don't let the myths about organ donation stop you from saving a life
Katrina Erskin of Valley Stream was in shock when her five-week-old baby Jaleel died of sudden infant death syndrome. But after LiveOnNY discussed the lifesaving legacy Jaleel could have, Katrina decided to donate the baby's organs. Her father, who originally opposed the procedure believing it would be improper to touch the body for an organ donation, ultimately supported the decision. Jaleel donated his heart and liver, saving two babies. We are all capable of this noble act. Yet, sadly, millions of people do not volunteer to donate their organs upon death due to misconceptions about organ donation.

Hochul's affordable housing plan may expand in state budget talks
ALBANY — A proposal to build affordable housing statewide may include tenant protections as closed-door negotiations slowly drive Gov. Kathy Hochul and legislative leaders toward a state budget agreement that was due more than two weeks ago, according to sources. The State Legislature returns to Albany on Monday in what is the final day of the second 'budget extender' adopted by the leaders to keep state government running. The 2022-23 budget expired March 31. Hochul and the Legislature could agree to a third budget extender on Monday or, if a budget deal is struck, to begin to complete the roughly 35 hours of crafting of bills and then debate in the Senate and Assembly.

Newsday Holiday Lights: Homes that will brighten up your nights
By Rosemary Olander A s Long Islanders hit the lights to welcome the holiday season, they shared their gratitude for simple pleasures: time to gather with family and friends, to slow down and enjoy the moment, to create an outward display of their spirit for all to enjoy. 'We often get so caught up in the seasonal rush, and the past couple of years have been so challenging,' said Melissa Walsh, whose display glows in Lynbrook. 'Everyone should keep in mind that the most important things are the simple things — family and friends and cherishing the simple moments of the season — like driving around with our family and looking at holiday lights.

Neither Kyle Palmieri nor Cal Clutterbuck has resumed skating so both injured forwards will almost certainly miss Sunday night's match against Chicago at UBS Arena with upper-body issues as the Islanders try to snap a two-game losing streak. But Josh Bailey did return to the lineup for Friday's 4-1 loss to the Predators that opened this three-game homestand after missing Tuesday's 3-1 loss in Philadelphia with an upper-body injury. Bailey participated in pregame warmups for both contests, testing to see if he could play that night.

Shouts from the bocce ball courts pierced the whoosh of the salty breeze gusting off Great South Bay at Tanner Park in Copiague on Tuesday night. 'Nice and easy, nice and easy!' a man willed his ball as it rolled down the court to join several others. 'No, no, no!' yelled another, who threw his hands up in the air as his ball came to a stop. Kathy C. Hochul for New York governor
Shortly after Kathy C. Hochul took office 14 months ago, it became clear that New York's first woman governor would have to face multiple state crises in short order. Continuing fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, declining revenue from a sprawling transit system, housing shortages, sharing the burden of migrants crossing faraway borders, and a disturbing uptick in violence of different kinds all greeted her. Hochul rose to the office by succession after Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, elected three times, resigned last year facing impeachment.

Spooky times in the cemetery and beyond as actors revisit local history, infamous residents
Drivers coasting down Montauk Highway in West Bay Shore might do a double take when they see a man in 1700s apparel 'haunting' the road in front of Sagtikos Manor. It's no ghostly figure, though, just Joe Bentivegna. He'll be dressed in knee-high riding boots, breeches and an overcoat with ruffled sleeves that evoke the image of Alexander Hamilton on a Broadway stage, all the better to portray Isaac Thompson, a former resident of Sagtikos who lived in the manor in the 18th century. When a fall chill creeps through the air, many Long Islanders turn to tours where guides like Bentivegna dress in period costumes and unwind the clock.

Fear and mayhem on Long Island's roads
Recent news stories reported that deaths on U.S. roads in 2021 soared to a 16-year high. Any thoughts I have had about dying from cancer since I was first diagnosed in 2010 have been superseded by my fear of getting killed on Long Island roadways. The reports stated that road deaths climbed more than 10% to 42,915 in 2021 — the largest annual percentage increase in the history of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, which began in 1975. I haven't driven any great distances consistently since December 2019 when I underwent a stem cell transplant at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Pressure of chasing Roger Maris' record unlikely to get to Aaron Judge
Aaron Judge stepped to the plate with one on and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Yankees one swing from tying Sunday's game. On a 3-and-2 pitch, he sent a drive soaring toward rightfield. The crowd at Yankee Stadium made that sound of home run anticipation, but the ball fell short of the warning track and was caught. The Yankees also fell short, losing to the Royals, 8-6. Breaking news came out of the game: Aaron Judge didn't hit a homer. That has become the exception. He had homered nine times in his previous nine games and a franchise-record 12 times in his previous 14 games.

It's time to flatten the variable cost of health care
What if you lived in a world where a new Toyota at one dealership cost $40,000, but the same Toyota at another dealership cost $200,000? It would seem absurd, but easy to manage. You would simply go to the dealership with the lower price — problem solved. But what if you couldn't know the price of the car until after you bought it, and you were often limited to buying from only one dealership? This is the reality for one-fifth of our economy — health care. The cost of health care can vary greatly depending on where you receive it, with hospitals typically being the most expensive providers by far.

Phyllis Baker Hammond honored with retrospective at J. Mackey Gallery in East Hampton
‘I always joke that I was trespassing,' said Justine McEnerney about the summer day in 2018 when she turned off Springs Fireplace Road onto a gravelly East Hampton driveway. Lured by the tall, shiny, free-form sculptures lining the private path leading to a studio entrance, her plan was to find out if a smaller version of the brightly colored sheet-metal assemblages was available for her to purchase. Six takeaways from new data on the state bail law
ALBANY — In the second full year of bail reform in New York, new data shows, the number of criminal defendants who are rearrested after being released remains relatively low — 1 out of 6 — and has ticked downward. It also indicates that judges set bail in fewer than half the cases in which bail was clearly an option. Those are just some of the takeaways from updated reports from two state agencies, the Office of Court Administration and the Division of Criminal Justice Services. The offices have been compiling data since New York lawmakers first overhauled the bail law in 2019 and amended it further, in 2020 and this year.

ALBANY — Democrats say a plan to charge a fee to drive into the busiest part of Manhattan will be good for economy, help clear the air and provide essential funding to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Republicans call the proposal a money grab forced on overtaxed suburban commuters and outer borough residents to fund a poorly managed mass transit system.
