Class of 2024 Call for Applications
New America's Fellows Program invests in thinkers—journalists, scholars, filmmakers, and public policy analysts—who generate big, bold ideas that have an impact and spark new conversations about the most pressing issues of our day.National Fellows advance ideas through research, reporting, analysis, and storytelling. We look for projects that are original and ambitious, with viable plans for their implementation. There is no set template for a successful fellowship project. Some projects focus on furthering a new public policy idea through either a domestic or international lens, while others illuminate longstanding dilemmas of American life from new angles.

Better Data Collection Upon Enrollment Can Help Schools Support Recently Arrived Immigrant Students
As of last week, 46.7 million public school students were back in the classroom. Among returning K–12 students were immigrant children who are starting school in the U.S. for the first time. Many terms are used to describe these students– newcomers, recently arrived English learners, immigrant children and youth, or recently arrived immigrant English learners– to name a few. While not all states and school districts are experiencing the same level of recently arrived immigrant students–20,000 in New York City and 1,200 in Chicago , and 50 just outside of Boston – all localities and schools have the same legal obligations to these students.

New America and The Intercept Announce 'No Way Home' Podcast
New York, NY – The Intercept, in collaboration with New America, has published the first episode of its four-part podcast 'No Way Home,' an original audio series developed, reported, and narrated by Afghans forced into exile when the Taliban took over in late 2021. In this series, three Afghan nationals directly impacted by last year's events and two decades of broken promises in the U.S. war on terror have chosen which stories to share –– and worked on every aspect of this unprecedented documentary podcast.

Rethinking Localism in Education Law and Policy
The school tax part evolved differently across regions. Let's start with the North. In the early 1800s, local taxes were minimal, if they existed at all. It's not really a road-building era and a police force is one sheriff. So you don't have a lot of costs. It really is the creation of a system of public schools that requires local taxes. And no one likes taxes, particularly people who have never paid them. So, part of what the states are doing is trying to find the path of least resistance for imposing taxes.

Reimagining Measurement Tools and Data Systems to Improve Pre-K Outcomes
Educators need reliable information to better understand children's early experiences and decision-makers need accurate data to make worthwhile investments in early learning. Strengthening pre-K measurement tools, data systems, curricula, and instructional supports can play a critical role in improving kindergarten readiness outcomes for children, especially Black and Latino children and children experiencing poverty. Currently, the early education field lacks measurement tools and data systems that prioritize equity and are reliable, free from bias, value cultural and linguistic diversity, and easy for teachers to use.

Climate Justice at Home and Abroad

Climate Justice at Home and Abroad
As the world grapples with how to address climate change, at the heart of the issue is justice. Globally, the nations that are projected to suffer the worst impacts of climate change are those that are least responsible for causing it and that have fewer resources to adapt. The same is true in the United States, where historically marginalized and discriminated communities often live on the frontlines of environmental disruption and have less means to adapt. If justice is not at the core of climate mitigation and adaptation policy, then inequality will worsen, historical wrongs will persist, and conflict will intensify.

Reflections on the Shift Commission's Predictions on the Future of Work, Five Years Later
A global pandemic reshaped the world of work. No one could predict that COVID-19 would dramatically accelerate a shift to remote and hybrid work and alter geographic patterns. In 2017, commissioners observed that inequality between the richest cities and other areas was increasing and that fewer workers were relocating across long distances. When the pandemic hit, remote work upended those trends: 'It changes how we work, it changes how we talk, it changes where people live,' said Derek Thompson , staff writer at The Atlantic .

Advancing Diversity in National Security
Join us in-person at Princeton University for a fireside chat with Jalina Porter, former U.S. State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson, who will discuss the importance of advancing policies and practices that enable a more diverse and inclusive U.S. national security workforce and foreign policy establishment. The benefits of a diverse workforce are well-documented, with research showing diverse teams are more creative, innovative, and better at problem-solving than homogeneous ones. But diversity is especially important when it comes to US national security and foreign policy, for which cultural competency and credibility both at home and abroad are essential.
