FULL RESULTS Maddy Bernau hit the winning shot in a shoot-off with Slovakia to give the U.S. the bronze medal in the first Olympic mixed team trap competition.  Bernau and Brian Burrows jumped out to an early 18-17 lead after 20 shots. Bernau missed three of her next five to open the door for Slovakia. The Slovakian team gave up the upper hand when Zuzana Stefecekova, the gold medalist in the individual event, missed three of her last five to give Slovakia a final score of 42 out of 50. That gave Bernau a shot to clinch, which she missed.

MATCH STATS Prior to Monday's Pool B finale at Ariake Arena, site of the women's volleyball tournament at the Tokyo Olympics, Italy's women seemed to have Team USA's number. Sure, the U.S. won a friendly earlier this year, but the Italians had been winning the biggies. Yet none of those matches carried the weight of Monday's, in which the top two teams in Pool B squared off for pool bragging rights heading into the quarterfinals. Italy stepped right up with a first-set victory, and after dropping the second set the Italians won the third in extras (27-25) to put the U.

Team USA captain Kevin Durant took control and drove the Americans to a 97-78 comeback win and a berth in the gold medal match. Durant had 23 points, nine rebounds, and two steals as the United States trailed by as many as 15 during a rough first half in Saitama, Japan.  The U.S. will either meet France, who upset the Americans in group play, or Luka Doncic and Slovenia in the final on Saturday. Devin Booker had 20 points in the win, while Jrue Holiday scored 11 with eight assists and eight rebounds.
