Google launches News Showcase in Japan, to pay fees to 40 publishers

(Photo courtesy of Google LLC/Kyodo) TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Google LLC expanded its News Showcase service to Japan on Thursday, enabling users to view headlines from more than 40 Japanese newspapers and news agencies that each collect a license fee from the tech giant. Unlike news content that appears through Google searches, the service allows news organizations to curate and package their coverage on the News Showcase page or app.

Typhoon Mindulle nears Izu Islands; east Japan's Pacific coast warned of heavy rain

TOKYO -- Large and very strong Typhoon Mindulle moved northeastward on Oct. 1, engulfing Japan's Hachijo Island in the Izu Islands south of Tokyo in a stormy area. The typhoon is expected to maintain strength and make its closest approach to the Izu Islands by early afternoon. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has called for extreme caution on the Pacific side of eastern and northeastern Japan over risks of powerful winds, heavy rains and rough seas.
