Lake Tahoe evacuation orders lifted, but fire threat remains
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) — The lifting of a mandatory evacuation order for South Lake Tahoe's 22,000 residents is a confident milestone in the fight against the Caldor Fire, but it remains only 49% contained and still threatens areas south of the resort town. Firefighters are confronting aggressive winds and flames in some southeast sections of the Caldor Fire, which could still reach Meyers, a community more than a mile high known as the gateway to Lake Tahoe, and other areas including the Kirkwood ski resort.

Oakland police investigate city's 105th homicide of the year
OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — The Oakland Police Department is investigating the 105th homicide of the year. It happened around 11:30 p.m. Friday night.  A man was shot and killed. Police believe it was part of a home invasion.  KRON4 spoke to the pastor of 'Acts Full Gospel Church' and he says the city is in crisis.  He says he thought the number of homicides was bad last year — but this years has been significantly worse. 'People are just shooting guns like the wild, wild west. It's crazy out here.'  It's a scene that's becoming all too familiar in Oakland.

2 Bay Area men sentenced to life for killing Italian police officer
ROME (AP) – A jury in Rome has convicted two Bay Area men in the slaying of an Italian police officer. The two were both sentenced to life in prison. The two young men were charged with killing the officer near the hotel where they were staying while on summer vacation in 2019. Finnegan Lee Elder, 21, and Gabriel Natale-Hjorth, 20, were indicted on charges of homicide, attempted extortion, assault, resisting a public official and carrying an attack-style knife without just cause. Prosecutors alleged that Elder stabbed Vice Bridgadier Mario Cerciello Rega 11 times with a knife he brought with him on his trip to Europe from California and that Natale-Hjorth helped him hide the knife in their hotel room.

Disadvantaged communities hit hardest by drought
DAVIS, Calif. (KRON) – During drought emergencies, like what we are facing now, a UC Davis professor says socio-economically disadvantaged communities are hit the hardest. 'There are significant disparities that get worse in a drought, and those who have the worst drinking water, get even worse drinking water when the systems are under stress,' associate professor Jonathan London said.  When you look around the Bay Area and up and down the state, Jonathan London says mostly rural but also urban communities are bearing the brunt of that stress.

San Jose Flea Market vendors continue to voice concerns over development plans
SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) — The San Jose Flea Market, home to generations of vendors who depend on it, may soon have to find a new home.  For more than 60 years, the San Jose Flea Market, also known as 'La Pulga' in Spanish is home to thousands of local vendors selling a range of household items.  Today's flea market spans more than 120 acres, making it one of the largest flea markets in the country.  But the landowners want to make room for new urban housing and a transit village, as the area is projected to see 25,000 riders a day by 2030 with the construction of the new Berryessa BART station, which sits next to the flea market .
