Oil subsidy rollback set to help region-beating Malaysian bonds
(Oct 5): Malaysian bonds beat all their regional peers last quarter, as rising oil prices bolstered the government's coffers. The expected rollback of oil subsidies in next week's budget announcement may provide another updraft. Bonds of the oil-exporting nation returned a relatively small loss of 0.7% in the three months through September, amid a torrid period for global debt markets. In comparison, their counterparts in Indonesia slid 3.6%, while in Thailand, they tumbled 5.7%. The Malaysian government has been talking about plans to lower oil subsidies for some time to reduce its budget deficit.

'They should be God-fearing, not MACC-fearing'
KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman's warning to police officers who are in cahoots with criminal syndicates will hopefully signal a start of moves to combat corruption in its ranks. Criminologists and a former police officer said Federal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain's disclosure of police involvement in corruption would have a ripple effect on a force known for practising a "code of silence". They believed Shuhaily's disclosure highlights a need for greater transparency and accountability in law enforcement to tackle corruption and uphold the rule of law.

KUALA LUMPUR: Pakatan Harapan (PH) communication director Fahmi Fadzil refuted claims made by Pahang Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah that Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) voters favoured PN in Pelangai. He said based on the Pelangai by-election results, it was proven that Saifuddin's claims were inaccurate. "Saifuddin's claim that all Felda voters are with Perikatan Nasional (PN) is not true. "Out of these three, the majority, within 10%, leans toward Perikatan Nasional, 10% leans toward the unity government, and one more lost with a margin of 5 votes," he said during a press conference after officiating World Post Day at Pos Malaysia HQ.

'Ease of doing business' still a concern, cabinet to update progress of major investments tomorrow
KUALA LUMPUR: The ease of doing business in Malaysia remains a concern as some investors have to wait for a long period for approvals from the respective authorities. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the cabinet would present updates on the major investments during its meeting tomorrow. "I have asked for a report on five, six companies to find out when the approval in principle was issued, the time taken, reason given and the final approval. "Despite all the economic policies, with the Madani (framework), some investors had to wait for two years for the EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) approval," he said when citing an example of this occurrence in his closing address at the 2023 Khazanah Megatrends Forum (KMF).

Malaysia on track to limiting temperature increase as agreed in Paris Agreement
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is on the right track en route to limiting the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels as agreed under the Paris Agreement in 2015. Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said in just about eight years, Malaysia had managed to progress and reduced one degree Celsius of the forecasted increase in temperatures by 2050. US, asked about Sikh separatist groups, says it respects free speech
WASHINGTON - The State Department on Tuesday said the United States respects the right to freedom of speech and assembly of individuals when asked about American factions of the movement for a Sikh separatist state that has long frustrated India. The Indian government has complained about the presence of Sikh separatist groups outside India, especially in Canada. The groups have kept alive the movement for Khalistan, or the demand for an independent Sikh state to be carved out of India. One such group called Sikhs for Justice is based in the United States and has been organizing an unofficial so-called "Khalistan Referendum".

Reeves says Labour would borrow to invest to make UK competitive
Rachel Reeves said the Labour Party would use government borrowing to invest in British industry if it wins power, a move she said is necessary to spur growth but will likely provoke a Conservative backlash. 'We will take it up to the level that is needed to compete internationally,' Labour's shadow chancellor told BBC radio on Monday. 'We will invest in the things that can get our economy growing.' The question of borrowing is a sensitive one for Keir Starmer's party given the typical Conservative attack line that poll-leading Labour would be reckless with public money.

China extends Taiwan trade probe, Taipei cries election interference
BEIJING/TAIPEI China on Monday extended an investigation into what it calls Taiwan's trade barriers against it by three months to the eve of the island's presidential election, prompting Taipei to accuse Beijing of attempting to interfere in the vote. Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory, frequently accuses Beijing of seeking to exert pressure, whether military or economic, to sway the outcome of its elections to ensure an outcome favourable to the Chinese government. China's Commerce Ministry originally announced the probe into what it says are Taiwan's trade barriers in April, but has now extended the investigation period to Jan 12, one day before Taiwan's presidential and parliamentary elections.

South Korean firms get indefinite waiver on US chip gear supplies to China
SEOUL Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix will be allowed to supply US chip equipment to their China factories indefinitely without separate US approvals, South Korea's presidential office and the companies said on Monday. The US had been expected to extend a waiver granted to the South Korean chipmakers, on a requirement for licences to bring US chip equipment into China. "Uncertainties about South Korean semiconductor firms' operations and investments in China have been greatly eased; they will be able to calmly seek long-term global management strategies," said Choi Sang-mok, senior presidential secretary for economic affairs.
