The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Excellence created Guidance on artificial intelligence ( AI ), a resource for faculty, researchers and staff to address academic integrity, assignment and assessment redesign, UH System resources and related policies. The guidance was created in response to the advent of AI tools, such as ChatGPT, GPT-4, Microsoft's Bing and others, that raise new questions and challenges for academia. Michael Bruno The Bishop Museum , Hawaiʻi 's largest museum that is the preeminent center for cultural and natural history in the Pacific, has added University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Provost Michael Bruno to its board of directors. Honolulu philanthropist and former First Hawaiian Bank Chairman Walter A. Former University of Hawaiʻi football star Ashley Lelie has agreed to serve on UH Mānoa Athletics Director Search Advisory Committee. Lelie played wide receiver for the Rainbow Warriors from 1999 to 2001 and was drafted in the first round of the 2002 NFL draft by the Denver Broncos. He played 7 years in the NFL as a wide receiver for the Broncos, Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders. After his pro career, Lelie served as an assistant football coach at the University of Nevada and Alabama A&M and as a student manager at UH when he returned to Hawaiʻi to finish his degree.

A problem that has puzzled the scientific community for more than 50 years has finally been solved by researchers from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Florida International University and Ruhr University Bochum (Germany). Several UH Mānoa Department of Chemistry scientists, led by Professor Ralf I. Kaiser discovered a new method to produce and detect the smallest antiaromatic heteroaromatic (characteristics of the compound) called oxirene under laboratory conditions that simulate molecular clouds and star forming regions in deep space.

Scientists, researchers and state leaders say Hawaiʻi's vulnerable coastal communities must plan for mitigating and adapting to the impacts of sea-level rise, groundwater inundation and coastal erosion due to climate change. 'It's poetry, art and math working in magical synchronicity. It's the perfect game,' proclaims entrepreneur Henk Rogers in 1988, in the movie Tetris about the addictive, ubiquitous video game. Apple TV+ said the film was, 'inspired by the true story of how [Rogers] risked his life to outsmart the KGB and turn Tetris into a worldwide sensation.' Rogers, who is portrayed by actor Taron Egerton in the movie, attended the University of Hawaiʻi Mānoa in the 1970s, and studied computer science. Today he is the president of the Tetris Company and the founder of companies and non-profit organizations focused on renewable energy, space exploration and ending the use of fossil fuels.

Shidler College of Business Jay H. Kathy Cutshaw and her late husband Larry Kathy Cutshaw, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa vice chancellor emerita, passed away on September 25. She served as the UH Mānoa vice chancellor for administrative, finance and operations (VCAFO) from January 2005 under six chancellors until her retirement in August 2019. She was awarded the title of vice chancellor emerita by the UH Board of Regents on July 18, 2019. Kathy in 2010 Prior to her tenure at VCAFO, Cutshaw served as director of administrative services for UH Mānoa's School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) from February 1997 until January 2005.

University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo women's volleyball player Samara Cruz and men's soccer player Christian Souza earned KTA Super Stores Superstars of the Week honors for October 12–18. Cruz, a junior outside hitter, put down a career-high 20 kills along with 15 digs against Holy Names University on October 12. She also tallied eight kills and racked up 13 digs to help lead the Vulcans to a 3-0 sweep over Dominican University on October 15. The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa welcomed its largest-ever freshmen class in its 115-year history in the fall 2022 semester. Overall, UH Mānoa enrollment dipped by just 0.1% in the fall, compared to a 1.1% decrease nationally, according to preliminary data. There are 19,074 students enrolled at UH Mānoa (just 24 fewer compared to fall 2021), including a record 3,106 first-time freshmen, a 5.7% increase from the record high set last year. The average high school GPA for the freshman class is 3.69, also up from 2021.

November 17, 2022 UH News President David Lassner provided updates on extramural funding and the public meetings for the proposed tuition schedule in his monthly report on November 17 at the Board of Regents meeting at the UH Hilo Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy. It is the first Board of Regents meeting held on a neighbor island campus since November 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gail Makuakāne-Lundin Lassner also highlighted the recent Wahine on the Rise event that commemorated the 50th anniversary of Title IX and womenʻs athletics at UH Mānoa and raised $700,000.

The COVID-19 pandemic is the latest in a series of multiple social crises that have impacted the global flow of people, things, institutions, and ideas in the opening decades of the 21st century. Many view pandemic lockdowns and social distancing as forms of 'deglobalization' measured by the reduction of the objective movements of goods and people. A few discerning academic observers, however, instead think of it as 'reglobalization' spearheaded by growing forms of digital interconnectivity. Susan Iverson is the vice president of community service for Delta Sigma Pi: Ro Chi. Delta Sigma Pi is an international professional business fraternity with four main pillars: professionalism, service, scholarship and brotherhood. The group's vice president of community service, Susan Iverson, said this project aligned specifically with its goals of community service and service learning.

Lee Buenconsejo-Lum Lee Buenconsejo-Lum has been named acting dean of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), effective January 1 to February 28, 2023, and as interim dean effective March 1 to December 31, 2023. JABSOM Dean Jerris Hedges will retire in March 2023 after serving for 15 years. 'Dr. Buenconsejo-Lum is well versed with JABSOM's operations, and I am confident that she will successfully guide JABSOM during this period of transition until a permanent dean can be hired,' Bruno said.

(Photo credit: Kevin Weng) During August 2019, more than 40,000 tourists visited Hawaiʻi's Molokini island—off of Maui's southwestern coast—to snorkel or dive. In March 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic dropped that number to zero. The sudden and prolonged drop in visitors to one of the world's most popular snorkeling spots provided scientists with a novel opportunity to study how underwater tourism impacts marine fishes. The results of the study, published in PLOS ONE , will help resource managers better care for Molokini and other threatened marine habitats.

Andres Albano, Jr., former University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents vice chair and a long-time local real estate investment professional died on March 28, 2023, at the age of 81. Born in Wahiawā, Albano was a loving husband, devoted father, faithful friend and loyal son and sibling. He was known for his kind and compassionate spirit, as well as supporting and guiding others in his many endeavors. Supporting his belief in the power of education, he served on the UH Board of Regents from 2004 to 2013.

Kumu Taupōuri Tangarō from Hawaiʻi Community College taught students, faculty, staff and community members the hula kiʻi and oli (chant) 'Holo Mai Pele,' strengthening the connection between the community and Hawaiian culture. Heewon Kwon An internship changed a University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa PhD student's perspective on government work and inspired her to pursue a career in the public sector, possibly in Hawaiʻi. Heewon Kwon is expected to graduate with her doctoral degree in social psychology from the College of Social Sciences in spring 2023. She recently completed a three-month remote internship assisting the Utah State Governor's Office of Planning and Budget (GOPB) to redesign the Utah Boards and Commission website to be user-friendly for the public and administrative staff.
