TSMC top invention patent applicant in Taiwan for 4th straight year in 2022
Taipei, Sept. 9 (CNA) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker, ranked as the largest invention patent applicant in Taiwan for the fourth consecutive year in 2022, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA). Statistics compiled by the MOEA's Intellectual Property Office showed TSMC filed 1,534 invention patent applications in 2022, down 21.3 percent from a year earlier but still continued to be the largest applicant in the country. Under Taiwan law, patents are categorized into three groups -- invention, utility model and design -- and invention patents are considered the most important in terms of new technology ideas.

Proposed minimum monthly wage hike to benefit 1.79 million workers: Ministry
Taipei, Sept. 8 (CNA) Taiwan's proposed wage hike of 4.05 percent in the minimum monthly wage reflects price rises of daily necessities -- the most significant in recent years -- and is expected to benefit 1.79 million workers, the Ministry of Labor (MOL) said on Friday. If approved by the Cabinet, the monthly minimum wage will increase from NT$26,400 (US$825) to NT$27,470, according to the MOL. That will benefit 1.79 million workers, including about 341,800 migrant workers, but not migrant caregivers or domestic helpers, whose minimum wage is not covered by Taiwan's Labor Standards Act.

(TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker, has accelerated its environmental efforts and is aiming to fulfill its 100 percent renewable energy consumption (RE100) target by 2040, 10 years before the original 2050 goal. Taipei, Sept. 18 (CNA) Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) on Monday called for China to immediately halt its "unilateral military harassment," after a record 103 Chinese military aircraft were detected around Taiwan in a 24-hour period that ended earlier in the day. In a statement, the MND said that in addition to the 103 warplanes, nine warships were also spotted in areas close to Taiwan, between 6 a.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday. Of the 103 military aircraft, 40 crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered the southwestern and southeastern parts of Taiwan's air defense identification zone (ADIZ), the ministry said.

Foundation in Philippines raises over NT$8 million for Taiwanese expat students
Manila, Sept. 10 (CNA) A charitable foundation based in the Philippines, founded by Taiwanese entrepreneurs and leaders of the Taiwanese expatriate community, on Sunday collected over 15 million pesos (approximately NT$8.49 million) at a fundraiser for underprivileged Taiwanese students. Speaking at the charity luncheon in Manila, the chairman of the Taiwan-Philippines Educational Development Foundation, Simon Su (蘇國芳) said that the primary mission of the foundation for this year is to pay the airfares of 316 Taiwanese students in the Philippines to return to Taiwan to study.

Military to showcase attack drone, jet simulator at biennial defense show
Taipei, Sept. 13 (CNA) Over 50 advanced weapon systems, including a new attack drone, a domestically developed jet trainer simulator, and an exoskeleton suit, will be showcased at the 2023 Taiwan Aerospace & Defense Technology Expo (TADTE), a top military official said Wednesday. At a press event, Major General Lee Chien-ching (李健青) said the Ministry of National Defense's (MND) pavilion at this year's TADTE, which takes place from Thursday to Saturday, would be divided into five major areas featuring 54 items covering joint combat equipment, dual-use technology, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and simulators.

Taipei, Sept. 28 (CNA) Taiwan People's Party (TPP) presidential nominee Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) on Wednesday dismissed the idea of unconditionally accepting the junior role in a prospective joint ticket with Kuomintang (KMT) candidate Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜). Responding to comments from KMT party grandee Jaw Shaw-kong (趙少康) on Wednesday that it would be "impossible" for Hou to not top the ticket, Ko described the KMT's rumored preconditions as a "peculiar" approach to negotiating an electoral pact. While accepting that a consensus must be reached, Ko questioned how the KMT could frame demands that he give up his own presidential ambitions unconditionally without regard for polling as "cooperation.
