Congressional term limits needed
BY REP. SCOTTY CAMPBELL I have been lucky to have had a talk radio career where I got to talk with people every day. While I did get to talk to a lot of special guests to help inform myself, our neighbors and friends, the most rewarding part of the job was when I got to listen to the callers voice their thoughts and opinions. We have some very astute voters who pay attention to what's going on in Washington D.C. and Nashville, and they would call in on a regular basis. Their voices were clear, concise, and to the point — they've made it known that they want term limits placed on Congress.

Be an encourager by pointing to God
From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham Dear Rev. Graham: Our country is in a very bad way. People are more inclined to let the government pay them for not working while employers are begging people to work! So it makes me especially angry for my husband, who is a very hard worker, to have lost his job during this critical time. He is completely defeated and I am at a loss with how to help him. — W.W. Dear W.W.: A person's self-esteem is often tied to his/her work. Losing a job can be very traumatic.

Secular or Christian education?
From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham Dear Rev. Graham: I have been given a scholarship to a state university, but my parents don't like the idea of me getting a secular education. I don't want to go against their advice, but I don't have the same financial opportunity at a Christian college. Is it wrong for a Christian to attend a secular college? — C.S. Dear C.S.: Some young people feel they should go to a secular college in order to have opportunities to witness for the Lord. In many cases, however, others feel the need to receive Biblical training and have a strong Christian support group.

There's nothing like a trip to the pumpkin patch…
It's that time of year when thoughts turn to finding that perfect pumpkin to make the perfect Jack-O-Lantern for Halloween or just to include in fall decorations around the home. Local residents and even visitors from outside the area are converging on local produce stands and pumpkin patches in their search for the perfectly shaped pumpkin that will be the talk of the neighborhood. Star Photographer Larry N. Souders caught up with some folks who were enjoying their time sorting through pumpkins for this fun time of year.

Brains and Brawn… Bob Peoples and the Louisiana Leviathan: Part 3
BY ALEX CAMPBELL So, there it was. As simple as that. Bob Peoples had called for the magical 700 pounds to be added to the deadlift bar. A weight that men had only been dreaming of for decades. Now, all Peoples had to do, with the very anxious Bill Boone looking on, was step to the bar and lift it. There was nothing between Peoples and that heavy bar but air and opportunity. If there is anything that people who live in the southern Appalachian Mountains know, it is how loyal folk can be to those who earn respect from their community.

Young woman feels pressure to be ‘perfect'
DEAR ABBY: My name is 'Lucia,' I am 15 and I live in Santa Catarina, Brazil. My high school classmates and I saw a letter from 'Needs a Direction, Atlanta' online. That's why I'm asking for some advice from you. Here in my country, there is a lot of awareness about female power and body positivity, however, we also have a standard of beauty that many girls can't or don't want to follow. On social media we see a lot of perfect girls with thousands of followers on Instagram. I don't let myself be shaken by my appearance or my defects, but sometimes I feel 'excluded' because I'm not like the 'amazing girl on social media.

Revised agreement starting point to resolving future Animal Shelter issues
BY IVAN SANDERS STAR STAFF ivan.sanders@elizabethton.com A revised operating agreement reviewed during Monday evening's Carter County Budget Committee meeting will lay the groundwork for the Elizabethton-Carter County Animal Shelter to move forward as a 501c. Major changes to the agreement come as a result of both the county and city mayors and other officials meeting to address unclear language in the contract. The most notable changes to the agreement were: – Animal Shelter ownership. A survey will be conducted of the land (46 acres) and the City will deed one-half interest in the property to the county.

A Life Lived: Mary Evelyn Sargent looked at life as an adventure
Mary Evelyn Sargent enjoyed the little things in life…in fact, it was the little things that became the big things in her life. If life was a game, she played it; if it presented a challenge, she met it; and if it presented her an opportunity, she grasped it. Mary Sargent died June 1 at the age of 94 after spending the past four weeks of her life in the nursing home. But up until that time she did a lot of living. She celebrated her 80th birthday by taking her first motorcycle ride. When a family member visited her on his motorcycle, he asked what she would like to do for her birthday.
