Tigers feature family dynamic this season
It's a family affair on the Tigers men's soccer team this season. With sons of former Tigers and two pairs of brothers, Dal looks to have a family-like connection on the field. Sam Ellis is joining older brother Jack Ellis this season. The first pair of brothers on the team, hailing from Liverpool, England, are following in their parent's footsteps. The Ellis brothers' mother, Carla Perry, won a national championship with Dal in 1994 with the women's team, and their father, Mark Ellis, accomplished the same feat in 1995 with the men's team.

Tigers athletes building communities through coaching
National Coaches Week begins on September 16 to celebrate the positive impact coaches have on athletes and communities across Canada. Over the years, countless Tigers athletes have given back to their community through coaching. Fourth-year jumper Tobi Oshikoya of the track and field team coached in his hometown of Truro, Nova Scotia, over the past two summers at École acadienne de Truro. As a jumps coach, Oshikoya coached children from grades 6-12. 'Charity begins at home,' is what Oshikoya's father has always told him and continues to resonate with him.

It's hard to challenge someone's false beliefs because their ideas come from social networks, not facts
Lara Millman is a PhD Student in Philosophy at Dalhousie University. Most people think they acquire their beliefs using a high standard of objectivity. But recent arguments between people about issues like trans rights, vaccinations or Roe v. Wade point to a different reality. Consider the U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. There is plenty of evidence to show that widely accessible abortions lead to safer outcomes for children and people who can become pregnant. Moreover, data suggests abortion bans are ineffective, harmful and dangerous.

Tips for navigating an emergency department visit: Who you'll see, what to ask and why it matters
Jasmine Mah, Dalhousie University and Melissa K. Andrew, Dalhousie University The emergency department (ED) can be a stressful and confusing place for individuals who are sick or injured. During the pandemic, with many hospitals not permitting friends or family to accompany ED patients, being alone may exacerbate the uncertainty, fear and anxiety patients may experience about things like waiting times, undergoing tests or medical prognoses. Research shows that almost half of all patients leave the hospital with a poor understanding of their ED visit.

Young U.S. voters reduced the ‘Red Wave' to a ‘Pink Splash' in the midterm elections — why didn't polls predict it?
Julia Rodgers is a PhD Candidate in Political Science at Dalhousie University. It increasingly seems that projections of election results based on public polling are unreliable. The 2022 midterm elections in the United States are a prime example. Americans appeared set to vote Republican en masse — in a so-called 'Red Wave' — on the morning of Nov. 8. Amid high inflation, a precarious House of Representatives majority and low approval ratings for President Joe Biden, a perfect storm was brewing. Polls suggested a huge Republican win was imminent and the party was poised to secure control of the House and the Senate with a sizeable majority.

How a tough first year inspired this Dal alum to help others prep to be successful
When an honours high school student starts university, everyone expects they will do well. But as Ashley Hill (BA'13) found out, the path to success seems only to be paved for some. Hill's post-secondary journey started the way it does for many students: she enrolled in standard first-year courses like macroeconomics and psychology. The trouble was, she was unfamiliar with the subjects and struggled to engage. It wasn't just the course material she had a hard time adjusting to. Hill was suddenly in much larger classes than she'd had in high school.

Upcoming Open Dialogue Live to discuss clean energy for the next generation
Climate change has become an undeniable reality for the modern world. Global temperatures are climbing an estimated 0.14° C per decade, according to U.S. government figures.
