UC Berkeley recently announced plans to work with e-scooter and e-bike rental services to offer discounts and memberships that are 'affordable and equitable' to students. A campus email on Friday highlighted the rentals as a 'sustainable' transportation alternative, adding that they can help fight climate change, noise pollution, traffic congestion and would fill transportation gaps where bus services may be inadequate. 'Micromobility is a key to reducing our dependence on automobiles and helping our residents get around sustainably,' said Berkeley City Councilmember Rigel Robinson in an email.

An experimental model co-created with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory will allow researchers to simulate and replicate earthquakes in a laboratory setting with the goal of expanding knowledge and advancing earthquake safety for large structures. Last spring, I left a tattoo parlor with a ladybug etched into  my inner forearm. I collect 'signs of life:' tiny images and memories reminiscent of the beauty in the world around me. They serve as anchors when my depression is at its worst. The ladybug tattoo exists as a permanent resident of this collection. I've held onto innumerable signs of life — the feeling of waves crashing over my feet, meeting my best friend in college and eating warm pancakes at my favorite restaurant back home. Getting the ladybug as my first tattoo was another one, a moment of unadulterated joy I'll always remember.

Sure, she's playing major music festivals now, but in the 2010s, experimental pop musician SPELLLING passed her days at Berkeley just like any other Letters and Science student: by writing disappointing poetry.  'I was mortified every time I walked off stage,' SPELLLING told The Daily Californian of her days with spoken word poetry organization CalSlam. 'It felt like ‘This is wrong, I'm being way too vulnerable.' And I knew this wasn't truly the art that I wanted to express … I think that was my first realization that I could find the courage to share things that are deeply personal and be in front of an audience.

Berkeley City Council candidates for Southside and Claremont/Elmwood joined a virtual forum to discuss climate, housing and transportation Thursday. Berkeley Neighbors for Housing and Climate Action, or BNHCH, hosted the forum along with Cal Berkeley Democrats, Telegraph for People and Walk Bike Berkeley. Candidates in attendance were Rigel Robinson – running for District 7 – and Mark Humbert – running for District 8. The Housing Choice Voucher Program, or Section 8, is the largest affordable housing program in the United States to date. This year, only 2,000 Section 8 vouchers will be granted to residents in Berkeley even though more than 20,000 residents applied, as first reported by Berkeleyside.  Section 8 housing vouchers are federal subsidies granted to low-income residents for the purpose of finding 'affordable, decent, safe and sanitary housing,' according to the Berkeley Housing Authority website.  Local housing advocate Darrell Owens said in an email that the Section 8 vouchers cover 70% of rent through federal subsidies, but that the 2,000 recipients must find housing within 120 days or their voucher expires.

The U.S. Department of Education rejected UC Berkeley's grant proposal for the McNair Scholars Program, causing the loss of more than $2.5 million in potential undergraduate research funding. The McNair Scholars Program provides federal research grants to undergraduate institutions to amplify first-generation students, those receiving financial aid and students from underrepresented groups in graduate education programs, according to the department of education's website. I'm an overachiever by nature. My Type A personality compels me to achieve my goals at all costs. For the majority of my life, my sole objective has been academic success. Throughout high school, my perfectionism was rewarded with immaculate grades. However, when I arrived at Berkeley, I quickly learned that excelling in college was more difficult. Here, perfect scores on exams were harder to come by than four leaf clovers in the Unit 2 courtyard. Determined to uphold my academic record, I spent my first year of college working myself to the bone.

I spent several days in — very hot — San Jose covering the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic during the first week of August. I learned a lot from observing my colleagues for a day in the pressroom, but also from elevating my tennis coverage from collegiate to professional tennis, albeit just for a week. One of my most important takeaways from the experience: No amount of water is enough to prevent you from the dehydration of sitting in a tennis stadium in 90-degree heat. Bring Gatorade.
