Astronomers may have found some of the very earliest stars thanks to James Webb
The University of Toronto team originally thought that the "sparks" might actually be separate objects far past or in front of the Sparkler Galaxy. However, the fact that all three versions of the Sparkler Galaxy show the same dots strongly suggests they are connected. James Webb peers into the ancient pastThe astronomers believe the sparkles are globular clusters like the ones seen around the Milky Way. Crucially, though, we're seeing clusters that are much, much older and were created at a much earlier time in the history of the Universe.

Ancient Turkish Ape Upends Human Origin Theory, Says Study
A new fossil ape from an 8.7-million-year-old site in Türkiye is challenging long-accepted ideas of human origins and adding weight to the theory that the ancestors of African apes and humans evolved in Europe before migrating to Africa between nine and seven million years ago. Analysis of a newly identified ape named Anadoluvius turkae, recovered from the Çorakyerler fossil site near Çankırı with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in Türkiye, shows Mediterranean fossil apes are diverse and part of the first known radiation of early hominines - the group that includes African apes (chimpanzees, bonobos and gorillas), humans and their fossil ancestors.

Eridu and Ubaid: Temples of the God Enki and His Consort Ninhursag
Ancient Sumerian mythology tells that Eridu, considered one of the most southern of the settlements close to the Persian Gulf, was inhabited before the flood when, according to the Sumerian King list: ' When kingship from heaven was lowered, the kingship was in Eridu, In Eridug, Alulim became king; he ruled for 28,800 years. Alaljar ruled for 3,6000 years ,' but modern archaeology traces it back to what is called the Ubaid Period, 5400 BC. Eridu was regarded as a place of great religious significance, since it was the dwelling of Enki, one of the trinity of Sumerian gods, his father being the supreme god An and his brother being Enlil.

QuickCheck: Do clay 'labu' make drinking water cooler?
FROM pots, gourds, the local 'labu' and the amphoras of ancient Greece, clay has long been used to store everything from grain, water – and the case of the amphoras – wine. Nowadays, most people might have 'labu' lying around the house as a decoration or a hand-me-down from their grandparents but not many use these receptacles for their original intended use, which is to store stuff. However, folks back in the day swore that their clay labu cooled boiling water faster than leaving it in the pot.

Stellar demolition derby births powerful gamma-ray burst
While searching for the origins of a powerful gamma-ray burst (GRB), an international team of astrophysicists may have stumbled upon a new way to destroy a star. Although most GRBs originate from exploding massive stars or neutron-star mergers, the researchers concluded that GRB 191019A instead came from the collision of stars or stellar remnants in the jam-packed environment surrounding a supermassive black hole at the core of an ancient galaxy. The demolition derby-like environment points to a long-hypothesized - but never-before-seen - way to demolish a star and generate a GRB.

Ancient Humans Genetics
People visit exhibits inside the Smithsonian Hall of Human Origins, Thursday, July 20, 2023, at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington. Until recently, the genetic legacy from ancient humans was invisible because scientists were limited to what they could glean from the shape and size of bones. But there has been a steady stream of discoveries from ancient DNA, an area of study pioneered by Nobel Prize winner Svante Paabo who first pieced together a Neanderthal genome. (AP Photo

Ancient 312-Million-Year-Old Fossil Unveils Insect Evolution
Insects are fragile, soft-bodied animals whose remains are difficult to preserve. Wings are often fossilized, but insect bodies, if present, are usually bits and pieces of the original prehistoric animal, making it difficult for scientists to study them. One way paleontologists learn about prehistoric insects is by trace fossils, which are almost exclusively found as traces on fossil plants. "We have a great fossil plant record," said Richard J. Knecht, Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard.

Shiver me timbers! How boat boxing foiled pirates and became heritage
Captain Jack Sparrow may be the swashbuckler of the Caribbean, but he would have met some formidable opposition centuries ago had he steered into the ancient watertown of Zhujiajiao in what is today Shanghai's suburban Qingpu District. The unchallenged champions of pirate adventure back then were masters of a form of Chinese martial arts called chuanquan (船拳), or boat boxing. This somewhat unusual combat technique has origins dating back more than 300 years. It is a branch of the southern school of Shaolin-style boxing.

Dried Bog Festival kicks off at Xixi Wetland Park with fishing frenzy
The annual Dried Bog Festival is in full swing at the Xixi Wetland Park through January 15. Visitors can rent waterproof pants and bags used by local fishermen to catch fish. If they manage to dig through the sludge for fish, they can keep it or have it cooked according to their personal taste at local family-run restaurants. At the opening ceremony on November 19, organizers hosted a ritual to worship the bogs, praying for a good harvest in the next year. This tradition has been carried down for generations, as the wetland's original residents made a living catching fish in ancient times.

Origins of World's Smallest, Weirdest Whale Revealed
The pygmy right whale , Caperea marginata, is the weirdest whale you've probably never heard of. Nic Rawlence Senior Lecturer in Ancient DNA, Felix Georg Marx Curator Vertebrates, Te Papa Tongarewa Ludovic Dutoit It is the smallest of the living baleen whales and restricted to the Southern Hemisphere. Its tank-like skeleton is unique among whales, and its ecology and behaviour remain virtually unknown. Even its mitochondria - the power plants of the cell - seem to be ticking differently.

St Helena's Liberated Africans Originated from Angola, Gabon
Between 1840 and 1867, thousands of enslaved Africans who had been "liberated" from slave ships intercepted by the British Royal Navy were taken to the South Atlantic island of St Helena. But little is written in history books or otherwise known about the lives of these individuals. Now, ancient DNA analyses reported in The American Journal of Human Genetics on September 7 offer the first direct evidence for the origins of St Helena's liberated Africans. "It was known that they most likely originated from areas south of the equator, but where exactly they came from was unclear," says lead author Marcela Sandoval-Velasco ( @marce_save ) at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
