Native language spelling bee inspires students to learn
by Rhonda McBride The statewide Yup'ik language spelling bee was born when one of Freda Dan's son came home beaming, after he won a prize in an English spelling bee. She wondered: What kind of an impact would a Yup'ik spelling bee have on children? Dan got to work to start the first Yup'ik spelling bee in what remains a grassroots, all-volunteer effort. Fast-forward to a dozen years later. The Yup'ik competition is still going strong and now incorporates Inupiaq – two Alaska Native languages in a fight for survival.

Two Beasts in the Bible
by Tad Lindley You have heard of the mark of the beast, and perhaps you have heard the Antichrist referred to as The Beast, but did you know that there are actually two beasts in Revelation? When John was in lockdown When John, the disciple that Jesus loved (John 13:23), was an older man, he was arrested and imprisoned on the Isle of Patmos. While he was in lockdown, he received visions from God. It is from these visions that he wrote most of the book of the Revelation. One of the visions that John received concerns the Antichrist.

Move your Body
by Heather McMillion National Physical Fitness and Sports Month encourages individuals of all ages and abilities to get moving. For ideal health, growth, and development experts recommend varying levels of activity for different age groups. Preschool-aged children (3-5 years old) should be physically active throughout the day (aim for about three hours every day). School-aged youth (6-17 years old) will ideally get at least 60 minutes of activity every day. Adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of activity each week and strength training activities at least twice a week.

River Watch ready to launch as spring breakup forecast gives above average flood potential
High snow load and cool spring temperatures provide conditions for possible flooding. The State of Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHS&EM) is assisting communities in preparation for breakup along Alaska's major river systems this spring. Each spring the River Watch program renews a partnership between DHS&EM and the National Weather Service (NWS). The Alaska-Pacific River Forecast Center (APRFC) and DHS&EM conduct aerial observations of rivers prone to ice jam flooding.

A Day to Honor our Dads
by Peter Twitchell Today is my day, 'Father's Day.' June 18, in the year of our Lord and Father in Heaven, 2023. As a dad I am reminded of the day and year of my first daughter's birth. June 03, 1973. I took part of my biological mom's first name Sarah and gave her her name – Sara-Anne (Saranne). I was born April 25, 1950 and my little baby was born 23 years after I was born. It was a joyous and beautiful day, and Mom was a happy grandma as well as the biological mom Elizabeth. Today as I think back it helps me to look at this noteworthy happening in my life because it was an important event which helps me to get centered and focused on the basis of this special day all the fathers have or if you will, all of the 'dads.

Hydrographic Survey ensures safe barge access to Bethel
Overview of bathymetric data collection from the river in front of Bethel. Photo by R&M Consultants by Marta Kumle What is Hydrographic Surveying? Hydrographic surveys produce maps of an underwater area. They reveal the depths, physical features and objects on the bottom. Onshore topography is a 3D model of the shape of the land, based on measurements of locations and elevations. Underwater, bathymetry is the equivalent of topography: the elevation and contours of the ocean bottom, seafloor, lakebed, river bottom, reservoir basin or any other body of water.

The Gift of Life
by Peter Twitchell When I was a teenager through my 50s I didn't know of physical pain. For one thing I was tireless and for 50 years I worked 3 to 4 jobs in a week besides my regular job. My strength and youth made it all possible. In the early 70s in Bethel due to a lot of drinking many cab drivers lost their jobs due to drinking on the job and made it possible for me to drive for people like Hugh and his brother Faye Short. I drove a Kusko cab, Rabbit Cab, Yellow Cab and Alaska Cabs. I was able to work my 8 to 5 job daily Monday through Friday and then do custodial work at the Braund building, City Shop, and the court building.

Nicotine is like a heavy backpack you can't remove
by Stone Sibbett I started vaping around 2011 when I was 16-17 attending Wasilla High. My girlfriend started smoking cigarettes at 14 and she switched to a vape in an effort to stop. Back then vapes were small, poorly vaping and quickly the wick had a burnt taste, or there were the bigger box mods I rarely see used now. I had no concept of nicotine. I did not think of it as addictive. It tasted fruity and I enjoyed making vapor rings and it became a habit. I've known people who spent many thousands of dollars per year to vape and instead of pocket sized we had fist size box mods and large jugs of liquid nicotine juice.

PILT payments provides economic boost for Alaskan Communities
U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) announced today (June 15th, 2023) that the Department of the Interior is distributing $35.4 million to eligible local governments across Alaska through the Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) program. To help offset the cost of maintaining a variety of community services, the PILT program provides annual payments to local governments in the state that contain federal lands that are not subject to state or local taxation. This revenue supports local governments by providing essential services, such as the construction of public schools and roads, firefighting and police protection, and search-and-rescue operations.

SCOTUS Indian Child Welfare Act ruling reaffirms Indigenous Rights
In a 7-2 ruling, the United States Supreme Court today (June 15 th , 2023) resoundingly affirmed the constitutionality of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). The Court clearly upheld Congress' authority to protect Native children, and the decision demonstrates a strong understanding of the principles of Indian law and the political status of Tribes and Tribal citizens. The majority opinion stated: 'We reject all of petitioners' challenges to the statute, some on the merits and others for lack of standing.

City urges customers to take advantage of paying bills online
The City of Bethel Finance Department fields a high volume of calls daily, many of which are from customers who want to pay their bills over the phone. The department is leaning to propose implementing a fee for taking over-the-phone utility payments from non-senior citizens, according to the Finance Department's report to city council, June 13 th , 2023. The department has been nudging its customers to use Xpress Bill Pay – the online bill paying system that the City has implemented. 'Answering the phone is a necessary duty, but for every phone call answered to take a payment, there is another potentially urgent call being missed, or an in-person customer being neglected,' wrote Finance Director Xavier Mason in his report to council.

AVCP celebrates the U.S. Supreme Court upholding the Indian Child Welfare Act
The Association of Village Council Presidents joins Tribal Nations and Tribal Organizations across Indian Country in celebrating the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to uphold the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). This is a victory for Tribal Sovereignty and for our Tribes, Tribal families, and Tribal children. ICWA has long been considered the gold standard of child welfare and remains so today. 'Today's decision in Haaland v. Brackeen confirms that we have long known—ICWA is constitutional! Our children are vital to our Tribes and ICWA ensures that Tribes can stand up for our children in the foster care system.
