‘Unveil better resources, solutions for climate change'
PETALING JAYA: Environmental groups have called for better resources for conservation efforts as well as concrete measures for tackling climate change. Ecotourism and Conservation Society Malaysia (Ecomy) president and chief executive officer Andrew Sebastian said the government could provide incentives to do away with single-use plastics. Malaysia, he said, had fallen behind in enforcing simple things such as curbing the use of single-use plastics. 'We should do away with single-use plastics and call for a complete ban on them.

A quiet victory for forest sustainability in Peninsular Malaysia
JULY 2022 was a momentous month for forest sustainability in Malaysia thanks to two important developments: The adoption of ecological linkages within the Central Forest Spine (CFS) Master Plan to guide forest planning and development in Peninsular Malaysia, and the amendments made to the National Forestry Act to tighten excision regulations in permanent reserve forest (PRF) lands, to add a new category of forest conservation classification, and to increase penalties for forest offences. The first milestone, the adoption of ecological linkages within the CFS Master Plan was approved during the 40th meeting of the National Physical Planning Council and is a clarion call to build forest connectivity, arrest further forest fragmentation, and re-enforce forest ecosystem sustainability.

Pivot economy towards natural environment: Report
Yet, much of the population have not benefitted from these revenues. A report recently published by the PNG Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) and UNDP, 'Making Nature's Value Visible: Valuing the Contribution of Nature to Papua New Guinea's Economy and Livelihoods', outlined this. 'It is the mostly subsistence-based agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors that account for a quarter of the GDP, and supports over 80 percent of the population,' said UNDP. The data and evidence is clear; highly concentrated extractive-based growth, combined with insufficient enforcement of environmental standards, cannot sustainably and inclusively increase a country's prosperity.

El Niño threat: Malacañang urges gov't agencies to save water now, avoid crisis later
MANILA, Philippines — El Niño is coming. Malacañang on Friday directed all national government agencies to ensure strict implementation of water conservation measures to prevent supply shortage amid the looming El Niño phenomenon. Marcos orders gov't agencies to conserve water as El Niño looms
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. has ordered all government agencies to 'strictly' enforce water conservation measures to avert a looming water crisis due to the threat of El Niño in the Philippines. Under Memorandum Circular No. 22 signed on June 7, the President directed the newly created Water Resources Management Office (WRMO), under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, to take the lead in the implementation of a nationwide water conservation program. Mr. Marcos created the WRMO in April this year pending the passage of the Department of Water Resources, as he admitted that the Philippines was facing a water crisis.

Iran Protests: Why The Country's Women Are Rebelling
First published OCT 5, 2022 Updated 44 minutes ago Podcast: The Detail Can this surge of women-led protests bring an end to 40 years of oppression? The protests happening right now in Iran are the biggest the country has seen in years. And they're being led by women - publicly cutting their own hair and burning their hijabs. Thousands are taking to the streets in mass demonstrations against Iran's oppressive regime, following the death of 22-year old Mahsa Amini in police custody in September.  Amini was detained by the so-called "morality police" after being caught in public wearing her veil incorrectly - a wilful decision by Amini to show her hair in defiance of the conservative standards for women's dress enforced in Iran.
