Korean tech bluechips squeezed by higher costs and weak pricing
Televisions are displayed at a retail shop in Seoul. [NEWS1] Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are dealing with a double whammy of rising costs and high inventory levels, a prelude to poor profitability. The electronics companies have experienced double-digit growth in the costs of parts and transportation as the prices of their products rose marginally or even declined in the first half, according to regulatory disclosures released by the companies on Wednesday. Samsung Electronics, the world's largest smartphone and television maker, is dealing with 58 percent increase on year in the purchase price of application processors, the primary chipset in smartphones, in the January-June period.

DMZ trails-full opening
11 DMZ hiking trails to open next monthBy Shim Sun-ah SEOUL, Aug. 18 (Yonhap) -- All eleven peace-themed hiking trails along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas will open to the public next month, the government said Thursday. The trails in Ganghwa, Gimpo, Goyang, Paju, Yeoncheon, Cheorwon, Hwacheon, Yanggu, Inje and Goseong will be available from Sept. 13 to December, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Goseong has two different trails. The DMZ, which is about 250 km long and 4 km wide, is one of the world's most heavily fortified borders, with the rival Koreas technically in a state of conflict, as the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.
