Opera has been part of Western music culture since it was created at the end of the 16th century. It combines music and theatre, and evolved from an Italian group of scholars, musicians and poets known as the Florentine Camerata, inspired by the discovery that ancient Greek theatre was often sung. It could be the combination of two key elements of human expression – singing and drama – that has ensured its survival. Operas from throughout history are being re-staged and re-envisioned around the world.
