NASA wants to send astronauts to the Moon for longer stays, and then on to Mars. All plans are reliant on the availability of water. We know there is water on the Moon following discoveries between 2008 and 2010. Bethany Ehlmann at the California Institute of Technology is leading the mission. Scheduled for launch in October 2023, its task is to orbit the Moon and produce high resolution maps of water and thermal conditions on the surface. How much water is there? Is it easily accessible? Answers to these questions will help determine where future missions should land and where settlements should be built.
