Koreans had already cut down on consumption of seafood before Japan even began releasing treated wastewater from the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea on Thursday. According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, some fishery products like rockfish and sea pineapple have taken a hit from scaremongering on social media surrounding the release. Seafood consumption also plummeted in 2011, when the Fukushima disaster occurred, and in 2013, when highly contaminated water leaked from the plant.
