Chinese ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian recently made a bold—and rather undiplomatic—statement that said: 'The Philippines is advised to unequivocally oppose ‘Taiwan independence' rather than stoking the fire by offering the [United States] access to the military bases near the Taiwan Strait if you care genuinely about the 150,000 OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) [in Taiwan].' Rightfully so, politicians and citizens alike saw it for what it was: a threat to our OFWs' safety if we don't toe the Chinese line.
