★★★☆☆This follow-up to the 2018 Netflix horror-thriller Bird Box (adapted from Josh Malerman's 2014 novel, and starring Sandra Bullock in a blindfold) is an unrelated story but set in the same bleak world: a post-apocalyptic Earth plagued by mysterious entities that turn you insane if you look at them. A Spanish production, David and Alex Pastor's movie has quite a Hispanic focus on religious mania caused by the end-of-days scenario. It lacks Hollywood faces — Mario Casas plays the lead role of Sebastián (in dark goggles rather than a blindfold), a father trying to protect his young daughter — but it has just as much violent action and feverish melodrama as the first film.
