MANILA, Philippines — No war crime had been committed in the conduct of operations which led to the death of communist leaders Benito and Wilma Tiamzon along with eight others, the Philippine Army said on Monday. This was the response of Major General Edgardo de Leon, former commander of the 8th Infantry Division, to National Union of People's Lawyers (NUPL)'s assertion that the reported manner of killings of the Tiamzon couple all points 'to the commission of war crimes by the military.' De Leon said government troops 'only attack legitimate targets' in line with the rules of engagement in armed conflict as stated in the international humanitarian law.
