Tairāwhiti has 20 active cases of Covid-19, according to latest figures from Te Whatu Ora. Up to midnight Sunday, Tairāwhiti had recorded 39 deaths and a total of 25,301 cases. Equivalent figures for New Zealand were 3566 active cases, 3376 total deaths and 2,474,005 total cases since the pandemic began. As at midnight on Sunday,  230 Kiwis were in hospital with Covid and another four in ICU. Te Whatu Otra has reported 23 deaths — one from Northland, five from Auckland region, one from Waikato, one from Bay of Plenty, one from Hawke's Bay, three from Mid Central, two from Wellington, one from Nelson Marlborough, five from Canterbury, one from West Coast and two from Southern.

The region's rescue helicopter team started last week with a maintenance flight to Hawke's Bay and ended it with bad weather that hampered flying. But the Trust Tairāwhiti Eastland Rescue Helicopter still managed a schedule of five rescue missions from last Monday. At 5.30pm on the Monday, the team responded to a medical event at Whakaki. The patient, in a critical condition, was flown to Gisborne Hospital. While the aircraft was in Hastings for maintenance the region was covered by affiliated, out-of-zone rescue helicopters.

MANILA  -The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) has partnered with Qatar-based firm United District Energy International L.L.C. (UDEI) and Marubeni Corp. (Marubeni) of Japan to use low-carbon district cooling technologies at the New Clark City in the province of Tarlac. MANILA  -The government was unable to fully raise its target amount of short-term debt during Monday's auction of Treasury bills (T-bills), as fresh geopolitical uncertainty following the attack on Israel over the weekend prompted investors to ask for higher rates. The state borrowed only P12.5 billion out of P15 billion it was hoping to raise via T-bills, the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) said. Auction results showed total orders for the T-bills amounted to P22.6 billion, 1.5 times bigger than the size of the offer.

Indiana University researchers estimated that in 2022, 66% of Marion County residents who needed treatment for a serious mental illness did not receive it - nearly 26,000 people. ReadingRoom The terrible tragedy of two deer hunters killed by a helicopter rotor blade   Johnny Cumming and my uncle Frank Erceg were the first fatalities in the venison export industry in New Zealand. At 10.20am on Tuesday, June 1, 1965, the two men were struck by the rotor blade of a Bell 47G-2 in the Mātukituki Valley west of Wānaka while dragging deer carcasses to the helicopter. They both died instantly. The chopper was engaged in uplifting the deer carcasses from tussock-covered mountainous slopes, where it was almost impossible to rest in a secure level attitude with the rotor stopped.

A research team from the University of Bristol has suggested that mycelium composites could offer a sustainable alternative to traditional building materials and help address socio-economic and environmental challenges in Africa. While we recognise that technical assistance and capacity building is a vital part of the wider international support needed, it is not the sole answer to addressing South Sudan's human rights, humanitarian and security situation. It needs to be accompanied by strong human rights scrutiny and accountability. The situation in South Sudan is dire.

When a wild turtle recovers from an accident and is released back into the wild, what happens next? A new study from North Carolina State University reveals that finding those answers can often be just as challenging as saving the turtle itself. NC State's Turtle Rescue Team (TRT) is an all-volunteer operation run by veterinary students that sees over 600 wild turtles, reptiles and amphibians each year. On average, approximately half of the animals admitted each year are successfully treated and then released back into their home environment.
