News Water Minister Harriet Shing says the Victorian Government remains opposed to further water buybacks. Picture: AAP THE Nationals have sought assurances that the Victorian Government remains 'steadfast' opposed to water buybacks, a position the government says has been made clear. Water Minister Harriet Shing told Parliament last week that Victoria's anti-buyback position was backed up by evidence, including from the Frontier Economics report, showing 'very clearly that buybacks do real harm'.

COVID inquiry a 'koala court': Webster
politics Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a federal inquiry into the COVID-19 response but lockdowns won't be examined. AN INQUIRY into the handling of the coronavirus pandemic has been labelled a 'koala court' by Member for Mallee Anne Webster, who says it's 'too cuddly towards Labor state Premiers'. 'Usually, questionable inquiries are kangaroo courts, but in this case the Prime Minister has gone out of his way to avoid scrutiny of state and territory actions during the pandemic – it's more of a cuddly koala court,' Dr Webster said.

Buybacks 'kill land'
News Mallee MP Anne Webster accused federal Water Minister Tanya Plibersek of being tone deaf and not understanding irrigation communities such as the Mallee. HISTORICAL water buybacks created a 'patchwork quilt' of dead land adjacent to prosperous farms, according to Member for Mallee Anne Webster. The Nationals Party MP spoke in Parliament last week against the Water Amendment (Restoring Our Rivers) Bill 2023, which would legislate water buybacks of 450GL from local irrigators and extend the deadline to deliver the full Murray-Darling Basin Plan.
