Police gave green light for new liquor licence despite issues dating back decades
Police did not oppose a liquor licence application in a small Southland town despite opponents lining up to highlight youth drinking issues. Furthermore, documents obtained from a 2016 application show alcohol misuse in the town dates back to the early 2000s when drunk youths burned down a classroom at Aparima College. Last month, a proposed new bottle store, Riverton Beer Wine and Spirits, failed to survive a hearing process after concerned residents came out in force. The decision has been appealed by the applicant, Otautau Hotel.

Confusion in Afghanistan around who's eligible for New Zealand mercy flight
An interpreter whose family worked with the New Zealand Defence Force in Afghanistan is calling for clarity from the Government about who is eligible to come back to New Zealand. Cabinet announced on Monday that a Defence Force plane, with about 40 personnel, would be sent to Afghanistan to help evacuate New Zealanders and Afghan allies after the Taliban took control of the capital, Kabul. But Diamond Kazimi, 28, who worked with the Defence Force as an interpreter in Bamiyan province and now lives in Hamilton, said he has spoken to people in Afghanistan who are confused about where to go and what to do.

Jacinda Ardern and Scott Morrison face press after China and Covid-19 discussion
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will hold a joint press conference with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison in Queenstown on Monday afternoon following their first face-to-face meeting in 15 months. Ardern and Morrison met for around two hours ahead of the press conference, part of an annual tradition where the leaders of New Zealand and Australia visit each other's countries for meetings. The press conference is expected at 1.30pm but could be delayed. It will stream live on this page. Ahead of their meeting Ardern noted the pair would be discussing Covid-19, and the similarities between the two countries who have both established a zero-tolerance attitude to community Covid-19 cases.

'All I want is chances': Plea from job-seekers with disabilities
Despite being a qualified barber, Caitlin Sheehan struggled to find work that didn't make her feel miserable every day. She wasn't diagnosed with ADHD until she was 20, and despite life being 'a lot easier' since, for 18 months she struggled to find work. Last week, National Party leader Christopher Luxon confirmed Jobseeker beneficiaries with a disability or a health problem could face sanctions under National's plan to get young people off welfare. The policy promise has drawn criticism from advocates, who have hit back at ableist rhetoric and notions of laziness ascribed to those forced onto Jobseeker benefits.

Auckland Council's southern hub proposal back on track
An Auckland Council plan to create a regional services hub in the heart of Manukau appears to be back on the table after being put on hold last year due to budget cutbacks. And while the council couldn't provide any costings for the project, head of corporate property Rod Aitken said design and planning work is already underway. The Manukau (Southern) Hub was part of an Auckland Council plan to increase efficiencies and offer more flexible services for customers. As part of the proposal it had been looking at selling a number of properties in the Auckland area so it could consolidate its key operations into three or four regional hubs.

'I don't know if they're in denial'
Former Waratahs and Australian coach Michael Cheika is frustrated with the performances of the New South Wales team. Michael Cheika wonders if the NSW Waratahs are in denial after a record-breaking 59-23 Super Rugby loss to the Highlanders left his former franchise staring down the barrel of an historic and humiliating winless season. The Waratahs leaked more than 40 points for the seventh time this year to gift the Highlanders victory in Dunedin on Saturday night. The Highlanders piled on nine tries to two at Forsyth Barr Stadium, extending the Waratahs' unprecedented losing streak to 12 matches while racking up their most points ever in a match against NSW.
