DOZENS of Indonesians had staged a protest at the Malaysian embassy in Jakarta over the publication and sale of a book by Cheeming Boey titled When I Was A Kid 3 . The illustrated book chronicles the author's childhood in Malaysia and was published a decade ago. Apparently, the protestors have taken offence to a specific set of illustrations that refers to the author's Indonesian maid as a primate for her ability to expertly scale coconut trees. Putrajaya's response had been to ban said book.

We refer to the statement issued by Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Suhaily Zain yesterday where he stated that the 'application' submitted for the upcoming rally on Sept 16 was rejected as it failed to meet requirements under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (PAA). Firstly, the police are either ignorant or misconstruing the law; there is no 'application' to be made for an assembly under the PAA. The requirement states that the police must only be notified of the assembly.

IT HAS been over eight months since the Federal Territories Ministry was restructured into a department and placed under the purview of the Prime Minister's Department on Dec 22 last year. Certain groups are now said to be lobbying for the resurrection of the disbanded ministry. Sources in the Prime Minister's Department have disclosed to StarMetro that Umno is lobbying for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to revive the ministry. AG on leave prior to retirement, says source PETALING JAYA: Attorney General Tan Sri Idrus Harun has gone on leave prior to his retirement on Sept 6, in line with finishing whatever annual leave due to him. A source said that his role would now be taken over by Solicitor-General Datuk Terrirudin Mohd Salleh, in accordance with the law whenever the AG is away or the post was left vacant. Under the subsection 376(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code, the SG shall have all powers of a Deputy Public Prosecutor and shall act as a Public Prosecutor in case of the absence or inability to act of the AG.

Economist Nur Ameera A. Jaz from the Centre for Foundation Studies in Science at University Malaya felt Malaysia could hold out for another two to three months based on existing stockpiles of rice. A Russian diplomat warned that if his country is declared a state sponsor of terrorism, it could not only harm US-Russo relations but potentially sever them completely.  On Friday, Alexander Darchiyev, director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's North American department told the TASS news agency: 'I would like to mention the legislative initiative currently being discussed in Congress to declare Russia a ‘country sponsor of terrorism.' Russia has banned investors from so-called unfriendly countries from selling shares in key energy projects and banks until the end of the year, stepping up pressure in the sanctions stand-off with the West. Western countries and allies, including Japan, have piled financial restrictions on Russia since it sent troops into Ukraine in late February. Moscow retaliated with obstacles for Western businesses and their allies leaving Russia, and in some cases seized their assets. She also said the statements made showed that they had not read the reasoning of the judgment and did not understand the law, thus leading to irrelevant statements and comments. Muhyiddin goes for broke THE two men were seen to be too close for the comfort of many in Umno but Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob appears to have stepped out from the shadow of his predecessor, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. Their public and rather terse verbal exchange last week caused a stir even though Malaysians are quite used to former prime ministers running down the government, something that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad does on a regular basis.
