ICRC campaign on the international day for the elimination of sexual violence in conflict
On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict (19th of June), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will be supporting the collaboration between Swiss artist and psychotherapist, Franziska Greber, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum, the United Nations office in Geneva and the City of Geneva, with an artistic installation centered on the issue of Sexual Violence in Conflict: its negative impact, the experiences and voices of survivors, ultimately calling for its prevention and eradication.

Detention by Non-State Armed Groups

Detention by Non-State Armed Groups
Detention – by states and non-state armed groups (NSAGs) – is a reality in armed conflict. In 2021, the ICRC estimated that around 100 armed groups were holding detainees. Detention puts people in a vulnerable situation: their lives and dignity depend on the detaining authority. Experience shows that detention by NSAGs often presents legal and practical challenges, ranging from a lack of knowledge of international rules and standards on detainee protection, in particular those found in international humanitarian law (IHL) , to practical challenges such as how to ensure humane conditions of detention in the dire realities of armed conflict, or how to provide essential judicial guarantees for persons facing criminal charges.

Reducing Civilian Harm in Urban Warfare: A Handbook for Armed Groups

Reducing Civilian Harm in Urban Warfare: A Handbook for Armed Groups
In 2022, from Africa to the Americas, Near and Middle East to Asia, the ICRC mapped 524 armed groups that are of humanitarian concern, with at least 175 million people estimated to live in areas fully or fluidly under their control. Urban areas, which convey both tactical and strategic advantages to them, have become the battlefield of predilection of armed groups. As their irregular and improvised methods of urban warfare result in incidental and deliberate harm to civilians, ICRC released a new set of guidance to Non-State Armed Groups (NSAGs), "Reducing Civilian Harm in Urban Warfare: A Handbook for Armed Groups".

The ICRC at the World Urban Forum: Cities' resilience is key in armed conflict and violence
The harsh reality of armed conflict and violence in vibrant global cities creates complex humanitarian challenges that need to be addressed. One key question is: How can humanitarian actors like the ICRC and others best support city authorities to ensure people have access to essential urban services – such as healthcare, water, and sanitation – despite high levels of armed conflict or violence?Such challenges make it vital that the ICRC is present in key urban fora to influence policy thinking and declarations and to profile and garner support for the ICRC's and wider Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement's urban work in the field.

Russia-Ukraine international armed conflict: Under snow and ice, landmines and unexploded ordnances pose deadly danger to civilians
"Mines and unexploded ordnance lurk in farmland and neighborhoods, each holding the potential to destroy lives," said Ariane Bauer, the regional director for Eurasia at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). "Mines must not be used, and we appeal to the parties to the conflict to mark and clear the contaminated areas as soon as possible and inform civilians of the dangers."While mines and unexploded ordnances have been a long-standing danger in this region, the risk they pose has increased exponentially since February.

International humanitarian law and cyber operations during armed conflicts
Cyber operations have become part of armed conflicts, and the international community recognizes that the use of ICTs in future conflicts between States is becoming more likely. The ICRC is concerned about the potential human cost of cyber operations and has documented areas of particular concern in the past. In March 2021, States recognized that cyber operations may seriously affect civilian infrastructure and thus result in 'devastating humanitarian consequences'. The ICRC urges States to work towards providing more clarity on the limits that existing rules of IHL impose on cyber operations.

The unforgettable sound of thunder
January 15, 2022 has become an unforgettable date for the people of Tonga as they are reminded of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano eruption that destroyed parts of the Island Nation forcing families to relocate, leaving their homes and livelihoods behind.Francis Latu Prescott will never forget that day that turned grey and left many families heartbroken."I was out in the garden when I noticed the dogs and chicken were acting funny and that is when I heard the huge bang," said Ms. Prescott. She talked about her experience of how she was left running for her life with just a backpack and her phone in the hopes to get up to Kings Vila Chauter for safety.

Childhood in Rubble: The Humanitarian Consequences of Urban Warfare for Children
Landmines, airstrikes, snipers – in cities across the world, children's lives and future are irrevocably changed by urban warfare. Urban warfare causes a staggering number of death and injury among civilians. It disrupts families, destroys homes, and displaces whole communities. It cuts off access to health care, education, electricity, water, and sanitation. The immediate and long-term effects of urban warfare on children's health, safety, and development, cannot be overstated. Unfortunately, such consequences have rarely been thoroughly assessed for children as a distinct group within the population.
