The Nov. 8 general election is quickly approaching, and 17 candidates are battling for legislative seats representing parts of Hoover at the federal and state level. U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer, a Hoover resident who has represented Alabama's Sixth Congressional District since 2014, faces Libertarian challenger Andria Chieffo, who works as an amnesty floor monitor at the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Bessemer. At the state level, seven legislative seats representing parts of Hoover have competition in the general election.

The Hoover Public Library plans to hold its annual veterans celebration on Nov. 6. The day kicks off at 2 p.m. with a program in the Hoover Library Theatre honoring the winner of this year's Freedom Award, given out by the Hoover Veterans Committee and Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce. This year's winner is Peyton Ligon, a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army. By the end of Ligon's 27-year stint in the Army, he had received a Silver Star, Bronze Star with Valor, Purple Heart, combat infantry medal and expert infantry level, among several other awards.

On September 18th, in recognition of National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation will host Together in Teal Butterfly Release. This event will raise awareness of the silent symptoms of ovarian cancer, remember those who have lost their lives, and honor those who are battling or have beaten ovarian cancer. The city of Hoover and Riverchase Galleria both plan to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season with tree lighting ceremonies in November. The first of the two tree lightings will be Friday, Nov. 18, at the Galleria. The mall plans to start gearing up for the tree lighting about 6 or 6:15 p.m. with live Christmas music from a band in the food court, said Mike White, general manager for the Galleria. Then at 6:30 p.m., the lights on the big Christmas tree in the food court will be turned on, and Birmingham Children's Theatre will put on a show called 'Letters to Santa,' White said.

BASKETBALL The Hoover girls basketball team was back in action last Monday evening, beating Oak Mountain 71-32. The Lady Bucs were led by Aniya Hubbard, who scored 15 points. She was joined in double figures by Reniya Kelly, who finished with 13 points.  On Tuesday, the Hoover boys suffered a 53-46 loss to Oak Mountain in area play.

This dynamic workshop explores effective, evidence-based tools to support the process of recovery. Participants will learn the basics of a mindfulness awareness practice that can apply to each person's life experience. We'll explore the limitation of mental ruts and how to move beyond, and into the benefits of mindfulness awareness. Participants are invited to explore body awareness as a means of grounding in order to move away from patterns that dominate. Invitations for exploration are combined with group sharing circles.

Join GirlSpring for a free film screening of 'Hidden Figures' on Saturday, March 12, at ArtPlay. 2 p.m. – Meet GirlSpring's Springboarders, Teen Leadership Group for Girls The group is taking applications. Open to girls ages 13-18 (girls cannot be older than high school juniors when applying), this diverse group addresses issues that all girls face by creating content on GirlSpring's website for girls by girls. They write articles  and poetry, create artwork and podcasts, interview successful women from the community and discuss important issues surrounding social justice, girls empowerment and more.
