In its latest weekly report, shipbroker Gibson said that 'electric vehicles (EVs) can rightfully claim to be a leading technology to reduce emissions. TotalEnergies on Sunday proposed to bring forward annual wage talks, in response to union demands, to try to end a protracted strike that has disrupted supplies to almost a third of the country's petrol stations. 'Provided the blockades will end and all labour representatives agree, the company proposes to advance to October the start of mandatory annual wage talks,' it said in a statement. The talks were initially scheduled to start in mid-November. Union representatives earlier told Reuters the strikes staged by the CGT, historically one of France's more militant unions, would continue.

Emissions from port-related sources increased in 2021 compared to the previous year, according to the Port of Los Angeles' latest Inventory of Air Emissions. The 2021 results were significantly impacted by a series of supply chain disruptions, particularly cargo vessels anchored outside the port complex. Over the past year, private and public stakeholders have been successful in reducing congestion and ships at anchor, which will improve 2022 emissions. Compared with 2020, emissions of diesel particulate matter (DPM), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx) increased 56%, 54% and 145% respectively.

More shipments of fuel oil, methanol and petroleum coke boosted Venezuela's August oil exports to the second highest level this year, a recovery from weak volumes amid outages, documents and tanker tracking data showed on Friday. Venezuela's oil production and exports have ebbed and flowed this year as frequent power and gas disruptions have affected state-run oil firm PDVSA's facilities. U.S. sanctions also continue limiting the markets that can receive Venezuelan oil. A total of 32 cargoes departed last month from Venezuelan ports carrying 760,710 barrels per day (bpd) of crude and refined products, and some 256,000 tonnes of byproducts, according to Refinitiv Eikon data and PDVSA's exports schedules.

More than 560 dockworkers at the Port of Liverpool, one of Britain's largest container docks, will go on strike from Sept. 19 to Oct. 3 over pay, the Unite union said on Friday, adding to a summer of industrial unrest caused by soaring inflation. 'Workers across the country are sick to death of being told to take a hit on their wages and living standards,' Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said in a statement, urging the the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company to table a good offer. The planned Liverpool strike follows an eight-day walkout last month by workers at Felixstowe, Britain's largest container port, which clogged supply lines but fell short of causing widespread disruption in an industry already facing supply chain issues.

Finding enough seafarers willing to sail ships stuck inside Ukraine's ports is set to pose a major challenge to the proposed grains corridor designed to ease an international food crisis. Russia and Ukraine last week signed a deal to restart grain and fertiliser exports that have been blocked in the Black Sea and on Wednesday Turkey unveiled a centre to coordinate the resumption of shipments. But some 80 ships remain blocked in Ukraine and the evacuation of most of their crew members means more mariners are needed in the region to get the cargoes moving.

US West Coast ports reported sliding throughput figures for August as tepid demand for ex-Asian cargoes pressured the market, while US East Coast volumes registered increases on shifting demand patterns. The Port of Long Beach had its second-busiest August, after shaving just 0.1% from August 2021, the port's busiest month in history. The port, which has broken monthly cargo records in six out of the past eight months, moved 806,940 twenty-foot equivalent units in August. The Bank of Canada is widely expected to deliver yet another oversized interest rate hike next week, lifting its policy rate into restrictive territory for the first time in two decades, but bets are split on whether or not a pause will follow. Ukraine has sharply increased fuel imports in recent months to overcome shortages which hit the country after the Russian invasion, the economy ministry said on Friday. Ukrainian officials have sought ways to cover consumption since Russian forces started attacking fuel depots and other facilities following its Feb. 24 invasion. The ministry said Ukraine had imported 709,500 tonnes of fuel in August versus 380,800 tonnes in May and 58,800 tonnes in March. 'On the market, we can see the gradual accumulation of reserves of petroleum products due to the constant growth of import volumes,' economy minister Yulia Svyridenko was quoted as saying.
