Women accused of witchcraft in Ghana find refuge in outpost run by sisters
Vivian Salamatu and 200 hundred other women here are bound together for life. They share each other's misfortunes and all have a similar story. They were accused of witchcraft, beaten, cast out and sent to "witch camps" that serve as havens. "When my nephew died after a short illness, everyone hated me," Salamatu explains in Dagbani, her native language. "My brothers-in-law said I was responsible, they accused me of being a witch." Dozens of elders and villagers gathered at her home to determine her innocence or guilt.

Cult deaths prompt Kenyan sisters, religious leaders to call for strict scrutiny of churches
Morris Yimbo is struggling to come to terms with losing his three sons in a starvation cult in the forest of Shakahola, a deeply traditional remote village of southeastern Kenya. Paul Mackenzie, a self-proclaimed pastor who in 2003 founded the Good News International Church, is believed to have lured and brainwashed more than 100 of his followers — including children — into starving themselves to death in order to meet Jesus Christ. According to survivors, some were killed. As of May 1, officials had exhumed 110 bodies from Mackenzie's property , according to The Associated Press.

Though a tiny religious minority, Bangladesh's nuns chart new path for nursing
Sister Mary Dipali chose to go into health care mostly because of her vocation, but also her willpower. "Through this profession, people can be approached a lot," said Sister Mary Dipali of the Associates of Mary Queen of Apostles, popularly known as the SMRA Sisters. "A nurse is needed from birth to death. I get to be around people, and many people are blessed through this profession." Sister Mary Dipali, 60, was born under the watchful eyes of the sister nurses of St. Mary's Catholic Mother and Child Care Hospital in Tumilia, Gazipur, in the Dhaka Archdiocese.

In Ukraine, 'a mission for light' illuminates daily life far from the fighting
"Advent begins Sunday," Sr. Margaret Lekan told me shortly before we crossed the Poland-Ukraine border on Nov. 24. "We're on a mission for light." The Polish Dominican sister smiled as she evoked the spirit of Advent and lights, but she also meant it literally: The cargo area of her congregation's brown Skoda Fabia hatchback was filled with dozens of boxes of flashlights and candles, bought while still in Poland and destined for a Dominican convent in Zhovkva, Ukraine. Since the Feb. 24 start of the Russian-led war, that convent has been transformed into an all-purpose sister-run humanitarian distribution center.

Q&A with Sr. Shibly Carmel Purification, spreading God's word through poetry
Skip to main content I have a prayer to give You, Lord. I wish to have a beautiful mind to See the world in a different way, to live my life serenely and with loveliness, in the core of Your Heart, Lord — a magnificent life, brightened by the glance of Your amazing Presence. Sr. Shibly Carmel Purification, a member of the Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows congregation, has reflected on her spiritual life through poetry like above.  Purification's attraction to reading and writing began in childhood and she has been writing poems and articles since school.

Q & A with Dora D'Rozario on being one of 11 consecrated virgins in Bangladesh
For Dora D'Rozario, living the life of a consecrated virgin is "the divine vocation, his great gift." "Each consecrated virgin becomes a light of Christ in the world," she said. The 63-year-old consecrated virgin has faced several challenges, such as "always explaining why I don't want to get married, a question that comes back all the time," she said. D'Rozario says she introduced consecrated virgins to Bangladesh, and she took her first commitment on May 16, 1985. Now, the country has 11 consecrated virgins.

Q & A with Sr. Virginia Asha Gomes, head of an international school in Bangladesh
Sr. Virginia Asha Gomes, 76, is a member of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions , popularly known as the RNDM Sisters, and the principal of S.F.X. Greenherald International School in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.  Born in Bangladesh in 1947, Gomes grew up in India because her father's job took them there. After completing her studies, she started her career as a headmaster's secretary in a church-run school, but she always wanted to become a missionary sister, inspired by her time in a missionary school and growing up with sisters in hostels.
