At least 41 killed in Egyptian church fire caused by electrical fault
At least 41 people were killed and 45 injured in a fire sparked by an electrical fault during Mass at a Coptic Christian church in the Egyptian city of Giza on Sunday. The blaze erupted just before 9am when 5,000 people had gathered for Mass at the Abu Sifin church in the Imbaba neighbourhood, two security sources said. The fire blocked an entrance to the church, causing a stampede, they said, adding that most of those killed were children. 'People were gathering on the third and fourth floor, and we saw smoke coming from the second floor.

Plumes of dust as India demolishes illegal skyscrapers
Indian authorities demolished two illegally constructed skyscrapers in a wide plume of dust debris on Sunday near the capital New Delhi, razing the tallest structures ever pulled down in the country in less than 10 seconds. Crowds watching the collapse from rooftops on nearby high-rise buildings cheered and clapped as the 103-metre tall towers collapsed from a controlled demolition and the dust enveloped the residential area. The Supreme Court last year ordered the demolition of the towers in the Noida area after a long legal battle found they violated multiple building regulations and fire safety norms.

Fraud and fury in Kashmir
WHILE the world looks away, Narendra Modi's government continues to take steps to impose more fraudulent arrangements on occupied Jammu and Kashmir. After J&K's illegal annexation, bifurcation and integration into the Indian union three years ago, Delhi has used force and fraud to maintain its unlawful hold over the region. Aug 5, 2019, opened a new chapter in the tortured history of the occupied territory intensifying the plight of the Kashmiri people. A prolonged cruel lockdown and communication blackout was imposed, the military siege tightened, the press muzzled and Kashmiri leaders jailed to prevent a popular upsurge against the move that took away virtually all the rights of the Kashmiri people.

Ukraine claims full control of key logistics hub, eyes further gains
Ukraine said on Sunday it was in full control of the eastern logistics hub of Lyman, Kyiv's most significant battlefield gain in weeks, which a senior official said could provide a staging post for further gains to the east. 'As of 1230 (0930 GMT), Lyman is fully cleared,' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in a short video clip on his Telegram channel. There was no comment from the Russian armed forces on Sunday on the status of the city. The Russian defence ministry said on Saturday it was pulling troops out of the area 'in connection with the creation of a threat of encirclement'.

At least 92 killed in Iran's Mahsa Amini protests: rights group
At least 92 people have been killed as Iran has cracked down on women-led protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini after her arrest by the notorious morality police, the group Iran Human Rights said Sunday. Kurdish Iranian Amini, 22, was pronounced dead on September 16 after she was detained for allegedly breaching rules requiring women to wear hijab headscarves and modest clothes, sparking Iran's biggest wave of popular unrest in almost three years. An additional 41 people died in clashes on Friday in Iran's far southeast, reported Oslo-based IHR citing local sources, saying the protests were sparked by accusations that a police chief in the region had raped a teenage girl of the Baluch minority.

Apple drops plan to boost iPhone production as demand falters
Apple Inc is dropping plans to increase production of its new iPhones this year after an anticipated surge in demand failed to materialise, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. The company told suppliers to curtail efforts to increase assembly of its flagship iPhone 14 product family by as many as six million units in the second half of this year, Bloomberg reported. Instead, the Cupertino, California-headquartered company will aim to produce 90 million handsets for the period, nearly the same number as a year ago and in line with Apple's original forecast this summer, the report said.

The business of hate
PAKISTAN'S economy has been under pressure for decades; the country has yet to get down to the business of undertaking the structural reforms necessary to put it on a firmer footing. However, the business of hate has been flourishing in the country, and the state and society do not squander any opportunity to profit from it. PML-N leader Mian Javed Latif's vile anti-Ahmadi remarks, intended to malign former prime minister Imran Khan, are yet another reminder that our political leadership can go to any extent for political point-scoring.

Oil ticks up on correction, on track for weekly loss on recession fears
Oil prices edged higher on Friday but were on track for a weekly decline amid fears of sharp interest rate hikes that would slam global growth and hit fuel demand. Brent crude futures were up 24 cents, or 0.3 per cent, to $91.08 a barrel as of 0315 GMT, but were down 1.9pc for the week so far. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures gained 10 cents, or 0.1pc, to $85.20 a barrel, but were also down 1.9pc on a weekly basis. 'Today's morning rebound for oil prices can only be described as a short-term correction, as the Fed will raise interest rates by 75bp or 100bp next week,' said Leon Li, an analyst at CMC Markets.

Ramazan comedy shows skyrocketed in popularity after Suno Chanda hit our TV screens and started a trend, leading to many more light-hearted shows such as Ayeza Khan's Chupke Chupke, Chaudhary and Sons and Hum Tum, to name a few. Writer Saima Akram Chaudhary's new show Kaala Doriya follows that pattern but it isn't a Ramazan show, much to everyone's surprise. The first episode dropped on Friday with Osman Khalid Butt as Asfand, Sana Javed as Mahnoor, and some familiar faces from previous shows. But Kaala Doriya's similarities to Ramazan shows of the past have garnered mixed reviews online.

Experts stress rebuilding of schools destroyed in floods
QUETTA: Educationists and experts have underscored the need to rebuild educational infrastructure in Balochistan in the aftermath of floods to ensure continual access to education in the wake of the disaster that left most of the province in a state of emergency. These views were shared on Saturday during an online seminar titled ‘Defending Education against Climate Change,' organised by the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training's STEAM Policy Unit. The panelists proposed effective public-private partnership models, the development and implementation of a comprehensive remedial and accelerated learning programme, and an international commitment to rebuild the destroyed educational infrastructure on an immediate basis to mitigate the impacts of climate disasters on the education sector.

President Alvi calls for ‘broader consultation' on army chief's appointment
President Dr Arif Alvi on Monday said that 'broader consultation' on the appointment of the chief of army staff (COAS) was a must so that a consensus could be developed. In an interview with journalist Asma Shirazi on Aaj TV, the president desired that a summary of the appointment be sent to him after the consultation has been completed. Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa is set to retire on Nov 29. The outgoing COAS ended all speculations about him getting another extension when at an event in Washington he confirmed that he would be stepping down at the end of his extended tenure in November.

Lack of ideas
OUR advertisement industry relies on poor entertainment concepts where we can see hosts, anchors and actors appearing repeatedly 24 hours a day in advertisements that are aired on the electronic media. These advertisements are mostly based on, or inspired by, foreign media, depicting their culture, having nothing to do with us. In many advertisements, girls are shown dancing at public places. I wonder whose culture they show. Innovation and creativity is seldom seen. I fail to understand why such silly ideas are adopted by the advertising agencies, and approved by the clients concerned.

Rescue operations continue as KP areas remain cut off due to floods
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Kohistan tehsil was reeling on Sunday as officials continued to call for help in rescuing people stranded in areas 'completely cut off' due to the deadly floods that have laid waste to lives and infrastructure across the country.
