Oil giant Shell eyes sustainable aviation fuel production by 2025
Royal Dutch Shell plans to start producing low-carbon jet fuel at scale by 2025, in an attempt to encourage the world's airlines to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Aviation, accounting for 3% of the world's carbon emissions, is considered one of the toughest sectors to tackle due to a lack of alternative technologies to jet fueled-engines. Shell, one of the world's largest oil traders, said it aims to produce 2 million tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2025, a ten-fold increase from today's total global output.

IMF trims 2021 global GDP forecast, cites 'vaccine divide,' inflation
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) expects global economic growth in 2021 to fall slightly below its July forecast of 6 per cent, IMF Chief Kristalina Georgieva said on Tuesday, citing risks associated with debt, inflation and divergent economic trends in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Georgieva said the global economy was bouncing back but the pandemic continued to limit the recovery, with the main obstacle posed by the 'Great Vaccination Divide' that has left too many countries with too little access to Covid vaccines.

Zee-Sony merger: A win-win for both strategically and geographically
Zee board gave its in-principle approval for the merger with Sony Pictures Network India (SPNI) after a meeting on Tuesday. Upon the announcement on Wednesday, Zee Entertainment's share rose 25% in early trade. Not only market wise, the deal is a win-win deal for both channels in every sense. Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) has got a life saver and SPNI, after several attempts, finally has a chance at the very lucrative Indian regional market. After Invesco, an investor in ZEEL with a 17 per cent holding, called for an extraordinary general meeting (EGM), it appeared as if the Indian company's promoters had their backs to the wall.

COVID-19: Centre asks states to prevent dumping of dead bodies in Ganga
The Centre directed Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on Sunday to prevent dumping of dead bodies in the Ganga and its tributaries, and focus on their safe disposal and a dignified cremation after corpses were seen floating in these rivers following a spurt in the number of coronavirus cases. At a review meeting conducted on May 15-16, the Centre said dumping of dead bodies and partially burnt or decomposed corpses in the Ganga and its tributaries has recently been reported, which is "most undesirable and alarming".

Nykaa IPO: Falguni Nayar and her family's wealth rises by $3.5 billion in a single day
Nykaa's CEO and founder, Falguni Nayar's family wealth increased by a whopping $3.5 billion (or around Rs 26,868 crore) in a single day after her profitable internet commerce company made its stellar debut on the bourses. The 54-year-old ex-investment banker's company valuation soared to $13.5 billion, as per estimates put forth by brokerage firms Angel One and IIFL Securities. Angel One had earlier proposed a valuation $7 billion. Due to the average 96.3 per cent surge at which Nykaa's shares traded on the first day of listing, Nayar and her family trust offices -- which still retains over 50 per cent stake in Nykaa -- now have collective worth of over $7.

COVID-19: SC extends limitation period for filing appeals until further orders
The Supreme Court has extended the period of limitation for filing appeals from courts or tribunals by litigants until further orders in view of the steep rise in COVID-19 cases across the country. A bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana said the extraordinary situation caused by the sudden, second outburst of coronavirus requires extraordinary measures to minimise the hardship of litigant-public in all the states. "We, therefore, restore the order dated March 23, 2020 and in continuation of the order dated March 8, 2021 direct that the period(s) of limitation, as prescribed under any general or special laws in respect of all judicial or quasi-judicial proceedings, whether condonable or not, shall stand extended till further orders," the top court said.

Cryptocurrency market crashes! Is it time to sell bitcoin?
Cryptocurrency holders worldwide are in panic as bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency, tanked by close to 40 per cent from its record high levels to US $31,000 on Wednesday, a level last seen in February this year. A week ago, it was trading above $55,000. The other two popular cryptocurrencies -- dogecoin and ethereum have also fallen by 45 per cent and 40 per cent, respectively. Experts blame Tesla CEO Elon Musk's tweets and China's recent action on the crypto front for the great fall. "The combined impact of global sell off, Elon Musk's crypto reassesment and China's action is behind the bitcoin price drop," says Shivam Thakral, CEO, BuyUcoin.

Coal Crisis: Government needs to have flexible policy, static policy would not work, says ex coal secretary PC Parakh
'The problem of the ongoing coal shortage is not the one which started today, it's a long-drawn problem,' points out former coal secretary PC Parakh in an exclusive interview with Business Today. Since the last few days, the shortage of coal has become a huge obstacle in the power generation. Many power plants have issued warnings that power plants are on the brink of closure. The former coal secretary explains how we reached here. According to Parakh, who retired from the bureaucracy in 2005, the delay in the entry of private players in the coal sectors is one of the big reasons that is fueling the crisis.
