Oil Has Dropped Sharply. Its Next Move Will Be Key.
Updated March 28, 2023 5:57 pm ET / Original March 29, 2023 1:45 am ET Order Reprints Print Article Ian Tuttle/Bloomberg The price of oil has dropped significantly, and now faces a technical crossroads. Crude's next move will be key for investors in both oil contracts and oil stocks.  WTI crude oil has fallen 9% to about $72 a barrel from its level just before the banking sector's troubles emerged earlier this month. Those issues have stoked fears that lending, and therefore spending, will slow down, which would decrease demand for oil.

The Job Market Has Been Red Hot. But Cracks Are Showing.
Updated Aug. 3, 2022 4:43 pm ET / Original Aug. 4, 2022 1:00 am ET Order Reprints Print Article Jessica Pons/Bloomberg Job openings are falling. Companies are talking about hiring freezes or laying workers off. Employees are working fewer hours.  The red-hot U.S. labor market, which remains the country's most important buffer against a possible recession, is now cooling noticeably amid spiraling prices and rising economic uncertainty.  Alongside a drop-off in real consumer spending and a second consecutive quarter of negative growth, it's the latest in a series of trends suggesting the country is entering a broad-based economic slowdown.

Threatened Rail Strike Would Hit the Economy Hard
Luke Sharrett/Bloomberg Freight railways warn that a strike by their workers threatened for midnight Thursday would cost the economy billions of dollars a day.Railroads carry nearly 30% of the country's freight, and unless the half dozen big operators reach a deal with workers before the early hours of Sept. 16, there could be a strike or a management lockout. Supply chains from agriculture to automobiles would get new snarls in a railroad work stoppage. The Biden administration is making an all-out push to avoid that.

Pfizer and Moderna Take Different Paths as Vaccine Boom Ends
Updated Aug. 9, 2022 3:59 pm ET / Original Aug. 10, 2022 3:00 am ET Order Reprints Print Article Dan Kitwood - WPA Pool/Getty Images Pfizer $5.4 billion deal to acquire the biotech Global Blood Therapeutics continued a year-long $26.4 billion buying spree, as the company puts its Covid-19 windfall to work shoring up its long-term revenue picture. The M&A campaign undertaken by Pfizer (ticker: PFE) stands in contrast to the strategy of its rival Moderna (MRNA), which has done no M&A so far, instead spending its Covid-19 cash on its own pipeline and stock buybacks.

Hotel Stocks May Be the Best Way to Play Business Travel
Spencer Platt/Getty Images After Americans' summer of revenge travel snarled airports and drove record crowds, the next question is whether or not the nascent recovery in business travel will take off. On that front, there's good and bad news. That's the takeaway from Truist Securities' discussions with corporate-travel data company Tripbam, which analyzes more than $20 billion of spending in this category. Truist analyst C. Patrick Scholes writes that for those concerned that anticipation of a recession is hurting demand, 'Tripbam is not seeing any indications of it in the business travel booking and pricing data as of now.

3 Chip Stocks That Could Be Takeover Targets: Analyst
Dreamstime Some semiconductor stocks are getting cheap enough they might become attractive takeover targets, according to Susquehanna. It has been a rough year for chip stocks. The iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) exchange-traded fund, which tracks the performance of the ICE Semiconductor Index, is down 34% this year as demand for computers and mobile phones has faltered. But according to Susquehanna analyst Christopher Rolland lower valuations could enable larger companies to scoop up small players and boost their earnings.

Intel Could Be Worth More Dead Than Alive. Why This Analyst Sees 50% Upside.
David Paul Morris/Bloomberg While badly wounded, Intel isn't dead yet. And at least one analyst thinks there could be considerably more value in the beleaguered chip company's shares than Wall Street generally believes.Let's be clear: The situation is bleak. Intel (ticker: INTC) last week posted one of the company's worst quarterly reports ever, along with hugely disappointing guidance. Intel is suffering the effects of slower personal computer sales (which many had already expected), softer demand from data center customers (which was an unhappy surprise), and continued market share loss to rival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

The Dollar Has Been a Problem for Stocks. Now it Could Give Them a Boost.
Updated Aug. 1, 2022 5:50 pm ET / Original Aug. 2, 2022 2:00 am ET Order Reprints Print Article The U.S. dollar has ripped this year—and that is been bad news for many stocks. But the greenback seems poised now to weaken. The U.S. Dollar Index (ticker: DXY) has gained almost 10% this year. One driver has been that the global economy has suffered as a result of high inflation, sending global investors into safe haven assets like the dollar. The other driver has been rising interest rates, which is also causing some economic stress.

September Is Usually a Bad Month For Stocks. This One Could Be Ugly.
NYSE The stock market's worst month—September—is approaching. This one could be particularly bad. The S&P 500 has averaged a 1% loss in September—dating back to 1928. according to Dow Jones market data. The same is true for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, dating back to 1896. Those are the worst monthly performances for both indexes in the calendar year.  That phenomena is well known, but this year brings about heightened risks that are coalescing right now. First off, the stock market has already ripped higher recently, with both indexes up double digits in percentage terms since their lowest levels of the year in mid June.

Charles Schwab Earnings Monday Will Shed Light on Client Cash Moves
Updated April 16, 2023 5:47 pm ET / Original April 17, 2023 4:30 pm ET Order Reprints Print Article The two most important words to watch when Charles Schwab reports earnings Monday, April 17? Cash sorting. That's a Wall Street term that describes the process of investors moving money out of low-paying bank accounts into higher-yielding options like money-market funds. Cash sorting has been happening at a brisk pace because of rising interest rates, and it likely will crimp Schwab's results.

How Jackson Hole Could Revive the Stock Market Rally
Graeme Jennings-Pool/Getty Images The stock market has gotten itself into a better place in the past few months. The Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole meeting could keep the good times rolling.  The S&P 500 has gained 13% since its lowest close of the year in mid-June. That's included a speed bump in the past few trading days, with the three major indexes now trading below their multi-month highs. The current concern is that the rate of inflation may remain high enough that the Federal Reserve will need to remain 'hawkish,' maintaining its recent pace of interest rate hikes, not slow it down.
