Life Actually By Kari Kampakis: Moms, a new book for you
If you've parented long enough, then you've learned firsthand why your personal wellness matters. You've felt the pain (or consequences) of devaluing yourself. Whether your wake-up call came from a diagnosis, a breakdown, an issue with your child or spouse, heightened anxiety, or simply feeling depleted, joyless, or numb, it most likely unveiled this truth: Mothers are humans too. We require love, compassion, rest and renewal. Taking care of our needs strengthens us and equips us for the road ahead.

Residents join efforts to keep neighborhood clean
Even in Mountain Brook, a city that values its parks and trails, there are people who don't respect the environment. That's the lesson learned by Paul Brown, a nearly lifelong city resident, one day several years ago. 'I was walking my dog on the McElwain Furnace Trail and happened upon a Great Blue Heron perched atop a floating mass of litter in Shades Creek while hunting his next meal,' said Brown in a written account submitted to Village Living. 'This troubling image was a vivid reminder that litter is far more than simply a matter of aesthetics on our roadways,' said Brown, who has lived in Cherokee Bend since 1987.

Mountain Brook seen as ‘huge draw' for potential residents at development near English Village
The charming villages of Mountain Brook promise to be 'a huge draw' to potential residents at a new luxury residential development planned for Highland Park in Birmingham, according to one of the developers, D&A Companies Partner Evan Watts. The Tramont, to be located at 1236 22nd St. S., will have 28 residential units in a dozen different layouts. At press time, the sales office for the project was located in English Village. Residents will have 'the ability to stroll to English Village for a coffee at Continental Bakery, lunch at Chez Lulu, a spa appointment at Tonya Jones, happy hour at Vino, antique shopping or a walk to explore the beautiful neighborhoods,' Watts told Village Living.

City of Mountain Brook surprises city manager with special honor
] Sam Gaston walked into the Mountain Brook City Council Chamber the night of Monday, March 14 — just before the council's regular meeting — and saw his family sitting on the front row. 'What in the world are they doing here?' he remembers thinking. 'Am I in trouble?' Quite the opposite. Gaston, the Mountain Brook city manager for nearly 30 years, has been memorialized in his own time as the City Council Chamber now bears his name. City Council President Virginia Smith said a great deal of thought went into the decision of how to properly recognize Gaston.

Vestavia Hills routed Mountain Brook 35-10 on a hot evening at Spartan Stadium in a non-region game to kick off the year. 'Mountain Brook is about as quality of a program run by as quality of a man as you can find,' Vestavia Hills head coach Robert Evans said following the game.

Crestline Elementary students give custodian a shoe surprise
One day Yaphet Minter got a phone call while working outside of his job as a custodian at Crestline Elementary School. The school principal, Christy Christian, had asked him to come to the auditorium and he immediately got nervous, he said. 'I was like ‘Oh man, what's going on now?'' Minter said. Little did he know the entire 4th grade class, their teachers and Christian would be waiting for him with a big surprise. As a token of appreciation from the class, specifically Crestline students Adams McKnight, Patterson Smith, Beau Dutton and Mac Mullis, Minter was given a pair of Air Jordan 7 PSG shoes, his favorite candy and a $100 gift card for his birthday.
