The clean energy NZ hasn't embraced
Wind turbines at sea could help meet high future demand: experts. International experts say New Zealand is missing out on a renewable energy source that could be a game changer for our ambitious clean energy goals: wind. New Zealand has plenty of it and, in recent years, has built onshore wind farms to generate electricity. But New Zealand has no turbines built out to sea, missing out on the huge potential of offshore wind developments, says Anant Prakash, Group Director, Environment and Energy, AECOM.

Pets unseen victims of domestic abuse
Photo/Supplied. Appeal comes as abused women are tracked down by ex-partners. This content was prepared by Pet Refuge and is being run by NZME as advertorial. The proliferation of domestic abuse in New Zealand is affecting pets as well as people – with shelter Pet Refuge saying it is operating 'on the edge of capacity' as it copes with pets staying longer and returning for a second time. On the eve of its annual appeal, Pet Refuge* says there is a trend of abusive ex-partners tracking down women who thought they had found a ‘safe home' – only to find they have to move again and find somewhere to look after the family pet.

Tackling the weeds before they take over
Blue morning glory, seen here close to the Cobham Bridge, can cover trees with a weedy blanket. Photo/ Supplied Opinion: It's been a great season for weeds in Whanganui, particularly the climbing ones which like to take over and smother trees and hedges. These climbers are like rust — they never sleep. And they have become increasingly prominent this summer in many of our backyards, parks and walkways. With many to choose from, I mention some of the more prominent culprits hoping that property owners will seek to recognise and remove them.

Premium Subscribers: Win one of two Black and Decker Dustbusters
Supplied image The Dustbuster includes 21.6Wh of lithium battery power, making it ideal for general cleaning tasks around the house. A boost mode allows the suction power to be increased for thorough debris pick-up. Its cyclonic action spins dust and debris away from the filter so suction power remains strong, and the bagless dirt bowl is translucent so you can see when it needs emptying. Don't miss out on this incredibly versatile addition to your home. Competition closes on Tuesday 27th June 2023.

Kiwi underdog takes on the giants
Photo/Supplied. Folders in Kaitaia an unlikely - but successful - entrant to competitive retail appliance market. If ever there was a Kiwi underdog story, it belongs to the Walker family and Folders – the appliances, furniture, and technology company based in Kaitaia (yes, Kaitaia) taking on the 600-pound corporate gorillas of Harvey Norman and Noel Leeming. Why Kaitaia? Because that's where Ian and Anne Walker were dairy farming at the time when The Warehouse opened a store in the town – and smaller local retailers began dying off.

The secret to savvy shopping
Photo/Supplied. 'Secret shopper' saves almost $50 on weekly groceries. The cost of living squeeze is biting into Kiwis' household budgets so, for some simple hacks on cutting costs, who better to ask than a woman known as a 'secret shopper'? Helen (her full name is undisclosed to protect her privacy and her 'undercover' work) is on the frontline as a working mum in Rotorua, juggling work as a clinical assistant at a local GP practice with her home life with her husband and two daughters. One daughter is a university student in another city but often comes home for weekends; Helen regularly runs her high school daughter to and from classes and rehearsals and her part-time job.
