KUALA LUMPUR (June 13): The government believes sugar refiners now have a 'way forward' out of their loss-making position with the addition of fine sugar to their production portfolio, according to Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub. 'We hope the industry, which comprises two refiners, by giving them this license [to produce and sell fine sugar] will use this opportunity as a ‘way forward' on the back of the cross-subsidy,' Salahuddin told Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (June 13) referring to MSM Malaysia Holdings Sdn Bhd and Central Sugar Refinery Sdn Bhd (CSR).
