The Roundtable: Are alcohol restrictions in remote communities working?
There's been furious debate about the future and safety of hundreds of remote communities in the Northern Territory after alcohol restrictions imposed under the Northern Territory Emergency Response in 2007 were lifted last month. The Northern Territory Government says the intervention era bans were racist, and passed legislation in May, giving affected communities the ability to choose or "opt in" if they want alcohol bans.A similar debate is happening in Western Australia where the Director of Liquor Licensing is investigating whether all mid and full-strength alcohol should be banned from takeaway sales in the Pilbara and Kimberley.
