Storms are changing our coastlines
Much of the Australian coastline has been impacted by increased storms and erosion in recent years. Beaches have been eroded or changed their shape. In some cases bedrock has been exposed shocking those whose beaches have disappeared. So are the changes permanent? Will eroded sand return? Michael Kinsela at the University of Newcastle studies coastal sediment dynamics, landform evolution and ocean processes. He explains that the return of sand is determined by the type of beach. He says coastal development often ignores the dynamic nature of coastlines and that we need to new legal frameworks as part of our adaptive management of coasts.
